'TELL US ABOUT YOUR SHOP' SURVEY - JUNE '06 GRUMBLE POLL & DISCUSSION
RESULTS from previous surveys: LINK TO RESULTS

How do we compare?
-What kind of Space are you in?
-How many retail entrances do you have?
-What is the parking situation?
-Do you rent/lease or own?

A special thanks to Roz for the idea.
Discussion is always welcome!

Ditto!

one more classification for location could be..... Downtown Retail (multiple tenants in building)

one more classification for parking could be ..... free public parking lot.

Mike - thanks for the thanks!!! I love the monthly surveys - find them very enlightening!!

I only used half of your poll idea, and tweaked it a bit. We'll do the rest in another survey (population, nearest big city, etc)

Mike

Right Randy. We have a couple free public lots in town. I put 2 entrances even though the 2nd is our back door that not many use or even think they can but we do have a small parking lot back there, again, not much more space than needed for employees and not real noticeable. Good poll. I'm a little surprised how few own (or are making payments!). Should I be? Maybe it has something to do with how long you're in business. We were in business 12yr before buying a building.

We never did do things like everybody else - we're not getting ready to move our business into our home, we're getting to move our home into our business!

I had to check "other". Only 4 of us in this building, and ours is the only retail business...a real estate office, a Resident Agent office, a Law Office and us.....so I guess we're not a retail building...but multiple tenants in a building in the downtown area.

What would that be called??

Commercial property - General

either
free standing or attached .... single use or multi use

Industrial property
free standing or attached (this classification has more to deal with noise, pollution, and heavy truck access and little walk in... but not limited to these factors)

I choose other because I think downtown doesn't really fit any of them well.

We have a lease, but we rent from the Collinses. That is to say, one corporation owns the building (with a mortgage) and another rents from the first (with a lease and everything). Means I have to sleep with the landlord to stay in business, but I get a nice rate! hehehe

We are in a residential free standing house which is on the main business street. A Drs office across the street also in a house. It is not our home but was a home previously.

Like Val, I checked other. We are in a strip "center". It really couldn't be called a mall by anyone's standards. There are only three businesses here. Us, a spa and a custom bridal shop.

Howdy

If anyone else is reading this and not sure what to pick:

Strip mall - a multi unit outdoor building (3 - 10 stores sharing a parking lot)

Mall - a multi unit facility that can be indoors or outdoors, generally 10 or more stores.

Standalone building - Commercial building, industrial building, converted mill, a building converted to 2 businesses, or just about anything else.

Other works too if you're not sure

Mike

Definitions are great-everybody has a different opinion

Mall is a great one

If you hate the giant 100+ store type units, then it's that "store at the mall" (said in disgust)

Yet, Mike's definition is 10 or more stores

Want to know how to describe your location?

Ask any 15 yr old girl that goes shopping (boy, was that redundant)

I think this varies greatly by metropolitan area, as well

Phoenix is the 5th largest city

In this market a mall has 150+ stores, 3 or more majors and walk in traffic from outside parking

Neighborhood power centers have 20-50 stores (or more), several larger anchor stores and drive up capability

Strip Centers have 15-20 stores with no much more than a grofery store type anchor. Some only have 3-4 stores with a 7-11 as the draw

Stand alone-gee, that's pretty self explanatory

I'll bet it's quite different in Poplar Bluff or Kodiak

Kodak doesn't have a mall. In fact, the Kodak Post Office is within the Sevierville City Limits. We are only a mailing address and (vaguely) home of the Smokies ball park (farm team for I forget who this year.)

Kodak is, however home to a gazillion "half-backs" - that is - folks from up north who retired to Florida and decided it was (take your choice) too hot; too dangerous with hurricanes; or too crowded, so they came "half-way" back and settled in Tennessee.

And, many of them have more than one home. Sevier County (which most of Kodak is in - not me, though) has no zoning laws, so therefore, you'll see trailer parks (yes trailer not "mobile homes") sitting right next to million dollar homes.

Weird, huh?

Now, what in the world does that have to do with "what kind of shop do you have?"

And besides that, Bob may have been talking about Kodiak, Alaska and not Kodak, Tennessee anyway...

I answered "other" because I am in a small community in the downtown commercial district. My husband and I own a retired Salvation Army Church built in 1920. The business is located in the former fellowship hall in the lower level. The upstairs is our home. It makes for absolutely no excuses to take a snow day in the winter but there's no drive time either!

Bill and Ted lied, San Dimas doesn't have a mall. And I never found a High School either... although I saw a teenager once. :D

Bob, does that mean you're in a Power Center?

Another question that could be added.
"How many who are renting should have purchased their building years ago" I know that if I had purchased any of the building I've had over the last 35 years I would be a smarted man now--hindsite is very good. When we started our business the rent was $.15 per square foot/month and I could have purchased the eight store center for under $100,000 and now if I was in the same building the rate would be almost $6.00 per square foot/month and it just sold for $2.1 million. The only thing I know for sure is that our customer prices have not increased as fast as the rent.

THE RESULTS ARE IN! Discussion welcomed
