What is it worth to you.

an on line appraisal is not worth the paper it is not written on.............the item is not seen in person and felt by the person. Therefore, all pertinent information about the item is not known by the individual making a stab at a value.

There is not enough resolution of most digital images to clearly see an item properly.

I could use it to get an "appraisal" for something that I have photoshopped the flaws out of. Then I could "prove" that it is worth more than it is.

(if I was the unscrupulous sort of person we never find on the grumble!)

As Jerome suggests, I’m sure an insurance company wouldn’t accept such an appraisal. My understanding is that a registered appraiser has to have “hands on” accessibility to the piece.

But, if you’re eBaying (okay, Cap’n English, wade in here) a Beanie Baby and have no idea of it’s worth, it may give you an idea for a minimum starting or a reserve price.

As a side bar:
I know personnaly know David Mahoney the founder of the referenced website. He is a good and well trained "Traditional Appraiser".

I just non't agree with the concept of this site and others of similar concept.

My understanding of the site was that it didn't actually give you an appraisal but gave you an opinion of value based on the info you provide. I completely understand what everyone is saying about appraisals for insurance purpose. I have a lot of customers come in with oils and ask if it is worth anything and to be honest I don't have a clue. I thought it would be nice that instead of them paying the price for a formal appraisal they could first find out if someone thought it had any possiblilty of value. If it did then spend the price for a formal appraisal. I don't think 10 bucks for an opion is bad. Based on the fact that most stuff is worthless.
