What is a Jiden Chopper, is it basically the same as a morso chopper? I can't find anything out about it via search engines.
The person selling it says, "This is an original Jiden built on a very solid Cast Iron Frame c/w new set of reversible blades and comes wit a 48” Measuring addition. ,it is in perfect shape and very accurate,of course." The asking price is $1600, he will sell it to me for $1000.....is it a good chopper? Please help!

Very similar to a Morso. Should be easier to find info on it spelled Jyden.

I think you will find it is a JYDEN Chopper or Guillotine... You will have more luck searching on this !

I have seen a few advertised here in Australia reciently for around the $800.00 (AUD) for a foot operated unit which is probably equivelant on the US market for around $600-$700 (USD).

Most (industrial) choppers are pretty good, but it would pay to have a play with it before you consider buying it.

Make sure :-
* the cuts are clean
* the cuts are accurate on the 45
* that all of the adjustments are working smoothly
* that the measureing system is accurate
* parts are readily available in your area
* blades are not too worn
* it operates smoothly

Cheers

The reason you can't find anything out about Jyden is because I believe they are now out of business. I think that Morso bought out Jyden some years back. I have a Jyden and have never had a problem with it. I've heard it said, the Jyden is bullet proof and should never need repair. I believe anything mechanical will break down sometime but I have to say I have never had a problem with mine and it was used when I bought it. I spoke to the company that imports & distributes Morso here in the US and was told that the springs are the only things that are interchangeable between a Morso & Jyden. I do use the Morso knives on my Jyden and they seem to mount up and work ok. Has anyone else tried to interchange parts? I would be interested in knowing if parts are interchangeable just in case something would break on my Jyden.

User manual

Hi Dianne,
Stealing from another thread on a Jyden chopper:
I think you are looking for SMI not SM1 check out http://www.framingsupplies.com/Pft/f..._Manual_II.pdf

This is a link to a manual that I believe is a Jyden chopper. It may help with your decision to buy or not. Thanks to Dave for the link to the above manual.

Jyden Chopper-link to manual not found

I tried the link...doesn't work.
I searched for Morso company contact info, can't find it.
Anyone know what their contact info is. I want to see if I can buy new blades before buying this machine. Thanks for all your help.

I found out years ago about the Jyden chopper when I sent in the blades of my Morso to be sharpened. Some how the blades for my chopper were switched and the blades I got back were for a Jyden. At first I thought that the sharpening company had taken too much off the blades because they no longer cut through all the way, and this was only the 2nd sharpening. But it turned out that the Jyden blades were a bit smaller than the Morso. The weird thing was that my blades could be used on the Jyden, but not the other way around. The whole mess caused quite a bit of distress during a busy time for my shop.

The company took care of the problem and sent me a new set of blades. They had no idea what happened to my slightly used blades and at that point I didn't care because I was back in business.

Some of the people who have been around a while at TC Moulding might be able to help you. A guy everyone calls Rouker was the one who discovered the problem with my blade switch. I think they used to carry the Jyden choppers. 651-636-6646

Diane, I have the Jyden chopper and a couple sets of back-up blades that are for a Morso. They seem to work fine but the Morso distributor told me they wouldn't work. I did and am still finding them wrong about that. From what I understand the older Morso parts fit on the Jydens but the newer Morso choppers no longer fit because Morso has been redesigned. Supposively the older Morso blades fit but the newer Morso blades don't - that is just what I heard about the new blades and have no personal experience with the new blades so I can't tell you for sure it is correct or not. I believe TechMark is the company that imports the choppers in the US - their information is:
Tech Mark, Inc. (501) 945-9393 info@tech-mark.com
