Question What do I use for transparent rice paper?

A customer has just brought in some rice paper picture which are a very transparent dark cream colour. She wants them float-mounted to the same colour board. The problem is that the paper tape I would normally use to mount them with is white, and it shows through terribly. What should I use? Is there anything acid-free and transparent on the market? These pieces are not valuable, but still I'd like to frame them so they won't get damaged with acid burn from tape as they are very delicate.
Cheers, Jodie

I generally use tiny, litle pieces of dry mount tissue that I tack to the back of the paper. Depending on the type of dry mounrt tissue, you will have varying degrees of "invisible." Even a teeny, tiny bit will adhere enough, if enough places along the edges are used, that the tissue will not be noticed. Some times, you have to strategically place the bits behind thicker areas of paper, or the more varied colored places to hide them.

Works.

Solid window insert mat in white, slightly smaller than the piece... inserted into the mat they want...... explain why to them. or better yet... show them.

I could probably lose my CPF for suggesting a pressure-sensitive tape, but Lineco makes this stuff called "Document Repair Tape" that might just do the trick. It's EXTREMELY thin, and when burnished onto a document it practically disappears. I would suggest using it as a passthru hinge rather than a V-hinge.

OMG! jim, now we have to turn you in.... :D

actually I was kind of thinking along that line because it "just gets it done". Jodie didn't mention "Museum", "Preservation" or even "Conservation"...... so what the hay....

and besides, they can take away my MCPF and day they want.... I really don't need it. :D

If you're sure a pressure sensitive tape is appropriate here, 3M #887 is the best I've seen. It has a very thin polyester ribbon and a good quality acrylic adhesive. Its bond may be reversible in the future, but I wouldn't count on that.

A couple of other possible float-mounting choices, both of which involve no adhesive in direct contact with the art:

-- Stabiltex wrap over a slightly-oversized backer.

-- Optium Acrylic overlay/direct contact mount

Just so there's no misunderstanding...

The CPF and MCPF designations could expire if not maintained. But if maintained, a PPFA designation could never be taken away.

Baer is not an MCPF.

Instead of dry mounting tissue, maybe a couple small dabs of Fusion or BEVA, which are clear films. I'd be concerned about the drymount tissue either showing immediately, or discoloring over time.

Thank you all so much for your help. Many of these products are not available here in Australia, (doh!) but Fusion 4000 is. Is it clear for sure?

We looked at the new very thin tape at WCAF and ordered a roll for just such occasions.
