What do I do with this canvas?

I have a painting on canvas from Africa. The "canvas" is lightweight and is "glued" to a heavy paper backing. The paper backing has another drawing on the back as well. There are bubbles in the canvas where it has not adhered to the paper backing very well. The customer wants me to just mat it, frame it and put glass over it. I hesitate to do that but don't know how to really handle it. The customer is working with a very tight budget. She has another piece just like it and wants them both done. What in the world do I do with this?

Thanks for your help.

The customer is right on this one. Any attempt to un mount it could and probalbly will have disaterous results. The "canvas" on these is quite often used bed sheets. I have never seen one primed, they are generaly brittle and will tear easily when stretched.

I see noting wrong with the above mentioned framing as lond as an air space is left between the art and the glass. Maybe a spacer between the mat and the art?

I have nothing much to add except another welcome.

It sounds like a primative piece made by an artist who had limited resources with which to work. As such, the thin fabric and paper backing become part of the look of the art.

I vote with those who say leave it alone.
