I'll be doing the same thing I did the last two New Years. DJ for a New Years Country Dance.

At the Fox Ballroom in a town called Cecil, WI on the shores of Shawano Lake they have a steak fry from 4:30 - 8:30. I then start playing Country Dance music (and some NOT Country Dance music) from 9:00PM 'till 1:00AM.

Have a Happy New Year!!!!

Well, you know my birthday is Dec 31, so I always have a swell birthday party. My kids and grandkids and dear friends will be here to watch videos, play board games and eat... standard stuff. Of course, this year I am recovering from my hernia surgery (a really bad sneeze started the whole thing!) and so probably will be the first to bed. Everyone will be spending the night, so I will see them again at breakfast, where Roger makes his patented homemade waffles. Then pork roast and black eyed peas for New Years Day. I LOVE my birthday!

Probably a lovely dinner out with my brother and sister-in-law, then home to watch the ball drop. I bought myself a Christmas present. A Fry Daddy to make my mom's famous sauerkraut balls. I don't know about the rest of the country, but up here in northeastern Ohio, sauerkraut balls are a big deal.

Happy Birthday Ellen.:D

And a very Happy New Year to all,

Lori

New Year's Eve, or in the food & beverage industry lingo "Amatuer Night".

I stay home, off the roads before dark. This year will be roasted oysters with the accompaniments, and King Crab legs. Perhaps a bit of bubbly. A couple less annoying members of the family and a couple close friends might be in attendance.

This will be the first New Year's Eve that my daughter will be out with her crowd (non-drinkers I am told), so a certain anxiety will be present as well.

To bed early (if I can sleep), then back up at midnight to calm the dogs from the jerks that think firecrackers are the only way to celebrate anything (may they lose a finger tip) and the usual tradition of cursing in the New Year (a recent addition to Festivus).

The traditional southern meal, not unlike Ellen's, to usher in the new year in a more civilized manner is scheduled for the first.

Happy Birthday, Ellen.

Lori, I can safely say that I have never heard of deep fried sauerkraut balls. Southerners are known for deep frying anything...this one seems to have escaped us. My initial reaction is probably akin to when you first heard of grits.

Looking forward...

to staying home! Nice surf & turf dinner, wine, hottub, relaxation and safety!

Haven't stayed home in a couple of years, so I am really looking forward to staying home and not worrying about how sociable I am or need to be :D

Happy New Year Everyone!!

Here's to a healthy prosperous new year :beer (need champagne glass smiley)

Cheers!

Elaine

Doing something a little different this year...

I live in a townhouse community and we've decided to do a progressive New Year's night. Cocktails at my place, dinner at another's, desert at yet another's place, and then watching the ball drop at the club house. All within walking distance (except it's supposed to rain).

Happy New Year to each and every one of you. And a very happy birthday and recovery to you, Ellen.

We're going to be up early tomorrow to head to Illinois so we can have a belated Christmas with my side of the family. We should be back by evening.

Depending on the weather, my daughter was planning on heading back to college to spend New Year's eve with friends. It's less than an hour from our house but if it's snowing or icy by the time we get back from Illinois, I guess she'll be celebrating with us instead.

Growing up in Pa., my daddy made us eat sauerkraut every new year's day. Something to do with having money in the coming year...I hated it! Fast forward to Alabama - down here it's greens and black eyed peas and it's about the money again. I hate them! Guess I'm just doomed to be poor! ;) Anyway, I'll be cooking ham - greens, and peas for my "I have to eat it!" husband and some rice pilaf and broccoli for me!

Working on the remodel today, most of tomorrow, and Monday. New Year's Eve going to a friend's home for his annual "Fondue Fest" ... yum!

Going to the American Legion with good friends for dinner. Probably be home before midnight. Monday, I'm planning on sewing and quilting and just doing fun stuff....and of course there's the obligatory pork and sauerkraut dinner (love it!).

Spent the past day and a half getting my tax stuff together and cleaning the office. Need to make a few end of the year purchases today and I'm ready for the tax man. Feeling quite noble about it. My mother used to tell me that your state of affairs at year end is what will be for the next year ??- I think it was her way of getting me to clean up my room! Anyway, if that's true, I should be very organized next year. Yeah, right!

Happiest of birthdays Ellen!

Happy Birthday and a speedy recovery Ellen!

Maryanne, my mother told me the same thing, and I've also been in my "office"the last couple of days, cleaning and organizing, new file cabinets, etc. All bills are paid and I'm ready for a new year!

Husband-the-Baker has to work until 10p.m. on New Year's Eve, but we're going to do what we did last year.....since New Year's Day was our first official day as new owners, we brought in the New Year at the shop, with sparkling ginger ale and a "picnic" of goodies, a lot of hugs and the excitement of the coming year. Little did we know what it would bring! Oy!! We will do the same this year, celebrating the frame shop's first birthday (to us), a year of incredible happenings and success, and hoping for more of the same in 2007.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!!

We'll be sending the pups off with friends and staying at a bed and breakfast on the ocean, to celebrate the wedding of some relatives.

Happy New Year all!

Today is my husband's birthday, so we will be celebrating with a nice dinner tonight. I am working in the shop today and on Monday...getting ahead on some orders due out this week as well as cleaning and reorganizing. Except for the last week's bookkeeping, my taxes are ready too! The accountant will be stunned!

I am also celebrating what I consider to be the end of a phenomenal first year back in the framing business. "What a long, strange trip it's been!"
We opened a year ago in September, but those first months were mostly a shakedown period. Things began to pop last March and have been sizzling ever since.

The Grumble has been one of my greatest resources. (Oh how I wish it had been available my first time around! It would have saved me so much grief!) I'd like to say thanks to everyone on this forum who takes the time to answer questions--even if those questions have been asked before. Discussion and debate are some of the best educational tools we could hope for. I just want to let you all know how much I appreciate you. Thanks! Have a Happy New Year!

Welcoming in the New Year as if...

we were in Florida on the beach!!

We do shrimp cocktails, hors d'eouvres and cocktails and watch the sun set. Chill for a while. Grill ribeye steaks and the fixin's... and anticipate the ball dropping (some years we haven't stayed awake...up north, that is).

New Year's Day. Relax. Chill. Reflect. Did I say Relax!

Happy New Year to all!

For the sake of Auld Lang Syne

Today I'll go for a bike ride. Make supper, in bed by 8 PM...no party

Tomorrow, another bike ride, clean the house, make pork, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes for my children.

Have a Happy New Years everyone.

Jack

What's with the pork and sauerkraut?

Jack is the second Grumbler to mention it. Is this a New Year's tradition nobody ever told me about? Has my life been that sheltered?

Sounds good to me.

Braise a pork loin in a dutch oven, add a can of beer, 300 degrees for about 4 hours, add well drained sourkraut, cook for one more hour. WHOYA!
with a side of latkyas...mmmmm yummo.

This isn't what we are doing New Years Eve, but a FABULOUS thing we did last night, 12/30/06 - I really want to share with my Grumble Friends!

Yesterday, 12/30 was my parents SIXTIETH (60) wedding anniversary. We went all out for their 50th and opted to keep this 60th memorable, yet low key by comparison. Thus.......

A month ago we made dinner reservations at the wonderful Ruth's Chris Steak House in Scottsdale, AZ. (You have all heard about this place from fellow Phoenicians, such as Bob Carter or myself.) My parents were led to believe that Dan (hubby) and I were taking them to "someplace nice" for their celebration. Unknown to our parents, my brother and sister came from northern parts of Arizona - after talking to them on the phone from THEIR perspective homes that morning. A special part of the evening was that my brother, still single and looking for just the right woman all these years, brought "the right woman" to meet Mom/Dad for the first time........a moment that my folks had resigned themselves, would never happen in their lifetime!

When I made the arrangements, Ruth's Chris said that they had a private room for a group of 9 or more, whom have a tab of about $800 - 900 (we just don't drink THAT much! ;)). We were a party of 7 and would be placed with everyone in a loud, crowded room - still a lovely experince to be had!!

My sister, brother and soon to be fiancee gathered around the restaurant table while Dan and I picked up my folks. When we reached the restaurant, the hostesses greated us with open arms and took the four of us down a long hall and into the PRIVATE ROOM (they only have one)!! There my parents saw my siblings and broke out into the happiest tears I've seen for years! My once QUAKER mother actually 'melted', lightly hitting the wall, then referring to her children as "little shits" for our act of pulling off such a memorable surprise (her initial reaction). What could be better than that! hee hee!

The dinner last 3 1/2 hours!! The private room and fine, fine service made us feel like royalty. Hats off to Ruth's Chris! Hats off to my brother and sister for making the trip! Hats off to our parents - SIXTY YEARS is a real accomplishment!

And yes, Mom and Dad are thrilled with my brother's 'miracle find', Julie!

It was a great way to end 2006 and is a great kick-off to our 2007. I hope you enjoyed the story as much as we enjoyed experiencing it!

HAPPY, HEALTHY AND SAFE 2007 TO YOU AND YOURS!

What a wonderful celebration. How could you possibly top that experience tonight??? Thanks for sharing! Congrats to your brother & his bride to be also!

Janet

I'm sitting in Union Station in Chicago right now, waiting for the 7:55 Lake Shore Limited to New York. So I guess I'll be celebrating the New Year aboard the train with a glass of champagne. We'll be getting into Penn Station News Years Day around 3:30 tomorrow afternoon.

Spent Monday to Friday on Seattle, and then took the Empire Builder across the country. I swear, this is such a civilized way to travel. No cell phones, no email, nothing. I'll check back in with you all next year.

Happy New Year!

Pork did it for us!

Fillet in armagnac (brandy if you prefer) with prunes and baby onions, baked leeks with cheese (au gratin if you prefer!) and roast potatoes.

Recipe suggested a full-bodied Southern French red to accompany.

I'm not a wine person but this time of year we can't move for the stuff, my sister sends us a case on standing order - 12 bottles from The Sunday Times wine club. Our son (Pat's son/my stepson) gave us 6 from a trip to France and we have at least another 2 dozen assorted from customers.

Opened a Bordox - wait - label - Bordeaux - from a place called Gironde - is that Southern France?

Who cares - PERFICK!!!!

So we watched the fireworks on the telly - from the London Eye - oh man - follow THAT!!!

Resolution? To be there for that event next year

John we also watched the London fireworks... they spotted in the clocktower of Red Square chiming across a dead quiet night air... you might say 'day & night' difference.... but after over 100 years of suppression.... it made sense.

London's works were beautiful, as were Sydney's, now we are waiting for New York's with their barges on the river and broadcast music... always a hit at the Bunny's Hutch. Then the other favorite... early bed.

Happy New Year to you all.
