This is what I got in my email today - sounds fishy doesn't it - next thing they will ask is for My Visa number!

Wierd thing is - don't know the person - and in the to: box is not my email address - how did I get it if its not sent to me????

I wonder the same thing, "How did I get the email if that's not my address showing??"

Yep it's crap alright... hit delete. Still don't understand what they gain from this type of scam. Seems odd when they ask to buy something from you instead of trying to get you to buy something, etc.

Richard is absolutely right. And it's a favorite tactic of spammers and scammers. More than likely it was sent by a Trojan Horse on some unsuspecting user's computer that had you in his/her address book. If you reply, it confirms your address is valid and then you will get tons of scams and malware in your inbox (like you don't get enough!). The spelling and grammer is another clue. Delete it!

I've recently begun wondering if I could fake a Mailer Daemon reply saying that no mailbox by this name exists. Would it get me off any spammer lists?

I had a mail program at one time that would do that. If you put any sender's email address on the block list, it would send a fake daemon message back whenever they would email you saying that the mailbox doesn't exist and to please check your spelling and syntax of the address.

I lost it about 4 hard drives ago and I really wish I would have copied it and carried it through to my present machine! I don't remember the name of the mail program but Mailwasher seems to stick in my mind, but I am not sure of that.

It's called "Blind Carbon Copy", or BCC. Copies the email to any address you enter, but the address doesn't show up on any of the emails sent. They only show the original address entered in the "to" field.

I use this to send our newsletter and other stuff too - after receiving numerous emails from suppliers with everyones' email address on view - didn't think it right that a load of other framers should know who I deal with and by the same token I don't suppose my customer database etc would want their email addresses on view to others either.

From these blocks of addresses I found myself looking further, for websites etc - curious. Asked myself how many others sent emails with these blocks that included my email address would do the same and would I like it if they did. Nope!

There is indeed such a programme and I use it every day on this computer. It is called "Mailwasher Pro" by Firetrust International. It marks all email as legit, friend or unknown and lets you see them before they are actually dowloaded from your server. When you tell it to "process" it sends fake "bounce" messages to all the spam addresses. I wouldn't be without it.

All e-mail programs should let you create a group that contains all of the e-mails your newsletter goes to. Only the group name would show and not the addresses inside it. This is generally considered better than using bcc nowadays because of the spam issues. Many programs will filter out e-mails that contain bcc addresses, or at least mark them as spam.
