This is more West Coast question, but I will guess that there are other regional shippers that this will also apply to for other parts of the country.

I used to use Pacific Mess when ordering moulding. ANd then swapped over to Just in Time. And at times use Cal Overnight (roma like them).

Both companies take full length, and ship super cheap. The limit is pretty much Northern and Southern CA for JIT. Cal Over does Ca and Nev, and Ore and Wash too.

Here is my quesiton: do most of you (west Coast framers) even know of them? Or you stick with UPS?

Marc,
JIT works great for me in AZ, I'm just outside the Phx. metro area, JIT comes here, some shippers don't.

We use Caifornia Overnight (now called OnTrac) all the time -- very reliable and well priced. Their "Sunrise" service usually arrives in the early afternoon the next day. Haven't heard of the other guys tho.

I wish there was something like this in Ohio. Most of my length suppliers are in NY/NJ so it means a freight delivery. Most of the time though it is next day.

CON brings full box to Portland next over night and Seattle the same or third, from Garrett in Santa Cruz. If you get a box quantity from Garrett they pick up the shipping even to Seattle. [Reason: UPS oversized and ground can be up to 5 days and $148.60....... CON under contract w/Garrett is about $29.... so why charge when a box runs between $350-700 of moulding?]

They also use Cal Over Night to get their stuff to WCAF... right to the back door... so zero drayage.

We order length only and use them, but we prefer a good freight deal with a select few suppliers so we pay no freight when possible. Limiting suppliers can pay off in this way by giving volume to companies that appreciate the business.

Isn't the drayage charged for delivering the boxes To the booth and back?

At the Art Expo Show at the Javitz Center in New York, the drayage and electrical cost could be higher then the booth cost.

"Drayage" is union speak for "we forked if from the truck to your booth (or within sight of said booth) and then back out to the dock again after the show".

"Electrical" is union speak for "we started thinking about how to bend you over like a shotgun and load you up like a cannon, about a week before you got here..... and we charge you for that time also."

If your booth is 3' from the outside door, you can drag it in while everyone else is busy.

Yes but you do pay for that next day.

As has been brought up, if you get above a certain $ minimum on a certain order vendors will often ship for free.

You try that some of the time hopefully.

Also, when you order, ask the order taker, what are the shipping options, what carriers do you have have that will go to me.

You might be surprised with the answer. There may be a shipper that specializes in NY to Midwest transit.

Or do you place the order with the rep and not the company?
