Hi! I am framing some posters that are quite large (28"x34") and I am wondering if there is a formula for figuring out whether a framed piece with glass needs a rigid back. I remember seeing a link to a site that had all kinds of standards....

thanx, Kari

Here's the site for the Fine Art Care and Tretaments Standards. (FACTS)

I don't think it's going to tell you if you need a rigid back. You'll need a rigid frame. Probably the only reason you'd need a backing heavier than fome core would be if you're expecting the backing to add strength to the frame.

I'm not worried about the strength of the frame, I am concerned about using glass that size. The rigid back would be used so that the glass couldn't flex. The pieces are going to be hung in a store as displays, and they may get leaned on or bumped into. Foam core will be enough?

I (sorta) agree with Denny. I'd think about plexi rather than acrylic.

For much of the framing I do for public areas - schools, banks, medical waiting rooms, etc. - plexi is specified by safety codes. You might want to check whether or not that's true of your customer.
