Any help on removing the waves in a print that was previously mounted with tape on mat board would be appreciated

Depends on the nature & value of the print ... if it is an open edition suggest drymounting, if reversability is a consideration use Artcare Restore.

If it has any value it shouldn't be flattened with adhesives. You can try sandwiching it between blotters and weighting it for awhile (weeks or longer) or consulting a paper conservator, or doing nothing but just reframing waves and all.

There are methods of humidifying and pressing flat between blotters with weight, but this can sometimes lead to problems for which you are likely not trained or experienced enough to deal with, and certainly won't be paid to deal with!

If it bothers the client enough to pay for it, you could suggest they contact a paper conservator. If it doesn't bother them enough to pay for it, you'd be better off leaving well enough alone.

It depends upon what caused the waves and the value of the print but I have used an application of heat from a press with some success. Experiment in one corner with a warm iron and see if it does the job, if it does lower the temperature of your heat press so that it will not damage the print. I am quite sure that most conservationists would not do this, so you had best consult you client first.

I had a Franklin Mint offset litho print with heavy coclking along the top due to the tape they used. I laid the print face down on a flat surface covered with paper to keep the print clean. I placed a damp cloth over the area for a few minutes so it would absorb some moisture. Next, I placed a sheet of plexi on it, then stacked heavy books for a couple days. It reduced the waves, but not elliminated. The cockling was bad though. I don't endorse my method, but it worked for me. Perhaps a conservator can help?

BTW, this Franklin Mint picture had the worst framing. The top mat had no bevel and the bottom reveal was printed on the print itself and revealed 1/4" to look like the second mat! There was a piece of paper behind the print and cardboard behind that. The glazing was 1/16" flemsy plastic. I got it off ebay, and rematted and glazed it after fixing the waves.
