About 400 years ago a walnut tree started growing in Central Oregon.
Four years ago, a storm with winds of 90-mph uprooted the tree and
moved it five doors down the street.

The tree was slabbed - - and that is the last time this board had to listen
to a machine louder than my radio.

Japanese saw made short work of the slab, and I was done before I thought
to take pictures of process. [trust me - it's not as exciting as fletching a
billet that is 12"x 8" and 4' long.]

Here I have have started to work to "flatten" the faces and backs

Then it's time to chop out the rabbet. I actually have a large 4-lb mallet that isn't shown
that is much better at chopping the grids. Two rows of 14-1/4" rabbet. Each takes about
four runs of chopping, and about 20 minutes of cleaning up with the rabbeting and bull-nose
planes.

Once all the parts are made, dry fitting everything will show you where you made a
mistake...

Tomorrow, I'll start the finishing, leaf the rabbet for direct contact, and carve the little square
pegs that will lock the tenons into the top and bottom rails

but for the night..... time for the hide glue to set up... the pot to go cold, and me to ice the arm.

Baer, you are incorrigible.

And I am positive that the late great walnut tree is honored to be in your hands.

Very Cool Baer, but take care of that arm or you will have to learn how to plane and chisel with your feet.
(and I know that you could).

Please be careful with the arm, I know your thinking right now you haven't got anything to lose, but I bet your doctor would disagree.

I've got 76 hours left to get a week's worth of work done and shipped.

As long as those two threads stay attached, I'm golden. Okay, well . . .
maybe more like bad-Friday-night-Saturday-mornings pee.......

But there are commitments, and then there are those other things...
what ever they're called... them things you just gotta do.
Sounds like watermelon or cantalope or..... oh wait..... honeydew....

Another coat of finish... and off to that flat thing...

Sort of like when I write a story where I imagine who would play the part;
I like to imagine what picture will be going into the frame....

This is not the picture... but I imagine the goofyness of young Labrador
retrievers and how you can throw a stick, and they will bring back a log...........
or two sticks.. just in case you run out..

I can't wait until I get to see what the artist really does with it.

Wow, Baer! I can't wait to see what the artist does either.. it's going to have to be quite something to live up to that frame.
