I just want to know when assembling tall mouldings (3inches & up) i usually insert 3-4 v-nails stacked but i still find that the top has a slight gap...
so my question is : what kind of vise do you use for extra assembly after the v-nailer??
or if you you dont use a vise what do you do instead??

23 Gauge pin nailer. So small that on most mouldings you won't need filler.

Not sure what you have up in the tundra there but Home Depot & Lowes stock them. Any place that sells a brad nailer, air stapler and most that carry pneumatic carpentry tools will stock them.

If you want a framing industry supplier, try AMS (Art Material Service). A few years ago I bought an Omer 28 gauge pin driver, whihc shoots pins from 1/2" to 1-1/8" long. As Jeff said, the hole is so small that it barely shows in most mouldings.

Went to home depot today and bought me a ridgid 23 gauge nail gun at 119.00$ cdn...
the question is do i shoot the frame first with the nail gun or after the v-nailer??

After. I just put the pins in the upper portion of the frame since the v-nails hold the bottom together.

I do have a tall vise that has an adjustment to push in the top of the mouldings.

Right. Use the vnailer to join the frame first, which holds it together, then put the pins in. With a headless pinner you really HAVE to cross nail, as there is almost nothing to keep the top of the nail pulling right through - even on hardwood, I'd imagine with softwood it'd be really bad.

Thanks for the tip! I was just in the process of joining a tall&skinny Vermont Hardwoods shadowbox... my test joins in the v-nailer were getting splayed apart. Ran out to Home Depot and bought me a Christmas present (the Porter-Cable pin nailer was $109). Worked like a champ!

Me too Jeff. I got a Kreg pocket hole jig.
