Has anyone seen or written information on framing a voilin in a fashion that is openable as a cabinet and the insturment remains removable yet secure?
Thanks

Mike,

I don't know if this meets your definition of secure. The Stradivarius moulding is piano hinged to the box with latches on the opposite side. The violin rests on oak pegs and tied in place with a piece of decorative rope. The bow is held with mightmount spoon holders. We were told that it would be removed from the box once per year or less. I have seen more elaborate or refined presentations but this one fit the needs of the customer.

In the May(?) issue of Picture Framing Mag, Jim Miller had an absolutely fabulous shadowbox with a violin in it. The fabric was swirled and draped around the violin, and I think concealed the mounts...check it out. Maybe something like this could be adapted so the violin is removable. Let us know what you decide.

At the customer's request we once made a violin box (with hinged frame similar to Rick's above) that was sized to fit between the studs in the house. A violin frame is very deep. The customer cut out the drywall and slipped the frame into the wall. The overlapping frame covered the rough edges of the drywall. He can open the frame and play his Grandad's old violin anytime he wants and it doesn't stick out far from the wall. We made the backing behind the violin from his Grandad's favourite sheet music copied onto beige paper to look old. Also a picture of the old fellow.

I knew I had seen something in print lately.
Thanks for all the thoughts, I like the peg and rope and the set-in the wall idea's. This job keeps getting better all the time.
