I have a vinyl banner coming in for framing that will be displayed in a car dealership. They don't want glass and i'm looking for suggestions on best adhesion methods. My thought is hopefully I will be able to remove grommets and stitching otherwise I don't know how I could get a good mount. Secondly my thought was to use gel medium or Yes for the adhesive. Any thoughts?

I have to see it again when it comes back (they were gettting a new one in better condition) I believe the image comes too close to binding to fold it over. Is it possible to get a good mount with binding intaked from the front?

Thanks,
Steph

We have had excellent results with vinyl wallcovering adhesive. (You did say it is a vinyl banner?) It is important to use a strong enough substrate like Gator. 1/2" gator (natural faced) is best, but 3/16 will do if the banner isn't too large.

We try to cut off the grommets and put it into our press (we have a 51 x 100) but when we can't cut off the grommets, we use a 1/2" foam blanket so we don't dent the platten. The grommets will emboss somewhat into the gator and they won't be a problem. If you can't use a press, there is enough surface area around the grommets that the frame around the perimeter will hold the edges down sufficiently. Sometimes we use a colored piece of paper (or the surface paper skinned from a matboard) to fill in behind the grommets. For really deep grommets, we use a hole saw and cut holes the same diameter as the grommets all the way through the mount board so they sit flusher, then back the hole with the colored paper before framing.

If you can't use a press, get a wallpaper smoothing brush to get the air out and apply the banner like wallpaper. Be sure to allow extra time for it to dry thoroughly. If possible, put a large weight in the center of the board while drying to minimize bowing.
