I got in an old oval photo project. The photo is damaged so we will do a restoration and generate a new copy. Also the frame is pretty much falling apart, so the customer is ok with a new oval that will resemble the old one, which I'm pretty sure that Inline Ovals will carry. So with a new flat photo, would I still use the convex glass? It seems as if the old photos in these oval frames tend to also convex in shape. I'm not sure what was done to get them to be curved.
Thoughts?

I would leave that up to the customer. If it was not discussed and not charged for I would use what ever materials were charged for.

Andrew, thanks for the link. That is a valuable resource. I don't know why, but I keep getting in these oval photos-each with a different issue.

Another question...when you wire an oval frame, do you do anything differently as to where you place your wire and hardware?

If you want to do it right have Dot Brogan make you a convex replacement.

I'm confused. If she is having a frame made by ILO, and wants a new glass;
why wouldn't she just have ILO make the glass as well?

Neither one is making covexed CC or MG....

for CC in convexed.... you need to go to Australia and Real Hot Glass (Les)

I wasn't talking about the glass ... I was suggesting that she retain the charm of the original (damaged) convex picture by having Brogan-Bowen recreate a convex restored copy of the image. So much nicer than a flat copy.

Hmmm, I didn't even get that from their website.....

I guess another case of a web master that was unclear on the goals... :icon9:

No Pat, I was an idiot.... I truly believed that the link was to the "home" page..
not the "contact us but we really don't have anything to offer unless you call us" page

convex glass

Hello, I have used convex glass in both oval and rectangular frames. It adds a new dimension to the photo flat or not.

The original photo has cracks and is crumbling, so we will do a digital restoration. I didn't know that the new copies could be rounded. Thanks for the great links Grumblers. When consulting our paper conservator on previous cracked photo projects, she did not want to work on photos. Something about so many layers of paper...That is why we got into digital photo restoration.

It's good that your paper conservator did not want to work on something outside of their comfort zone.

That being said, this type of problem/treatment is relatively common, and AIC's conservator referal system or Canadian Association of Professional Conservators would likely turn up someone who has experience in this area should you ever have clients who want to restore the original.

Rebecca,
Just went to the AIC website. Wow, there are alot more classifications than I thought. Our conservator is listed on the website, but not as treating photos. Glad I took the trip to the website.

The conservator I work with just repaired one for us that was not only cracked but had a piece broken off. They are a "full-service" studio with a range of experts. I think it might be to your advantage to at least explore forming a relationship with a second conservator.

We just finished working on a spate of oval photos and crayon portraits, all of them oval and convex. I hate them. We do them anyway.
