Valiani Astra cutter

Hi Dave -
Welcome to The Grumble
We use the Fletcher 2100 mat cutter (lots of use - great cutter)

Welcome to GrumblerLand.

I suspect you'll find that Valiani is a relative unknown commodity in these parts - much more popular in Europe.

For what it's worth, your local Larson Juhl in Mississauga has an old Valiani manual/pneumatic cutter which they used to use as their primary mat cutter in their pre-CMC days...

Having spoken at length to the fellow who actually cut (most of) their mats, it's a phenominal machine (much better built than their new CMC according to him).

We have a Valiani CMC which uses the same blades as the Astra. The blades are the finest, and most long lasting blades we have ever come across.

Being quite pleased with Valiani's quality, were we to look into a manual mat cutter today, the Astra would certainly be on our "must see" list.

Having said all that, as most folks around here will agree, you cannot go wrong with a Fletcher.

Good luck!

</font>[/QUOTE]Or with a C&H!

Seriously, Fletcher and C&H are great to work with. Both matcutters are very reliable. I personally do not like the Logan and Alto systems, but these matcutters have their proponents too!

Basically be sure you can get your blades for the cutter you buy.

i currently use a valiani astra in madison alabama, having previously used a fletcher, c+h, and a wizard. i would call it a sophisticated mat cutter (the astra, not me). the top stop uses a magnetic catch that rides on the cutter head, requiring one less manual step. the astra also features a lift you rotate to easily hold the entire clamp, and then lower it. on the what were they thinking? side the ruler guides vary in style and markings and the chop side requires using the stop for accuracy. if you like quirky you'll love the astra, i do.
