Hi,
I am thinking of doing a selling option on my gallery webpage for art and I was wondering if anyone does this on their site. My main question is cost of set up for a shopping cart vs. Paypal option with costs and ease of use. Thanks for any help. Jay

For my website www.infused.com It is set up as a shopping cart; the order looks like everything is being processed online, but in truth, the credit cards are run on the store credit card machine before shipment.

You will find the merchant services for online sales and hosting to be more expensive. I found it easier and less costly to input them at the store machine

I didn't know about the plan that Elaine uses for instore processing but I used PayPal for my site as I didn't have enough online sales to warrant a monthly charge for any other plan. I used the very same PayPal that Jay linked to on his post.

The charges are based on a per sale basis and the percentage IS a bit higher but it outweighs the monthly charge plus processing fee of some of the other plans. It is free to set up and, if you don't use it, you don't pay for it.

I would be interested in the process you use, Elaine, and how you set it up. Was it through your local merchant service or something that you found online??

My site is setup by Clickdriven Marketing and they provide webhosting, web development, etc. The site literally accumulates all of the information as if it was being processed real-time and then is stored in a "sales" email address where I can access the order, print the order and also take down the credit card information that was used in the processing. I take that "invoice" and run it through the storefront credit card machine as a sale. The website estimates the shipping charge based on their choice (dials into UPS, USPS) and has a handling fee included in the final number. It also includes sales tax where applicable.

I'm really just using my in-store equipment for my online orders. Its seamless to the customer and allows me to save money on processing and hosting.

Hope this clears it a little bit!

Elaine,

This is exactly what we do and processed over 1,000 web orders in 2005 this way. Our shopping cart sends us all the details, and we do not physically charge the credit card until the merchandise is pulled out of inventory and ready to pack/ship.

John,

Wish I was up to that many orders!! Any insight on how you drive traffic? Keep in mind, the site I'm talking about is food oriented, but I am working on my frameshop site now.
