Late last night I created a picture I wanted to upload to my local ISP server space to post on the G, and when I went to the area to add it to the hundred or so jpegs etc. stored there and linked to in numerous postings here, I found that they were ALL GONE! I called their tech support just now and was told that, sure enough, they had been lost during technical maintenance and were unrecoverable. They had nothing to say but an apology. An unknown number of other customers were affected too. Fortunately I have some of the files on my computers at home and work, but I don't even know exactly what was in there. So if you ever do searches on the G and encounter one of my older posts that involved a photo or graphic, you'll probably be seeing a strange icon instead.
I thought using my local ISP (phone company)'s server space would be pretty safe and secure but I guess that was naive. I liked doing it this way because of the clean, straightforward and simple interface. What alternatives do most of you use and what would you recommend?

Sorry to hear that Rick, that sux.

This is one reason I'd never rely on online backups - no matter how established or reliable they claim.

Especially for things relating to business.

Yes, I would never rely on only online backups either. Any more than I would rely on only CDs, only Local Network HDD, only Flash Drive, only Removeable HDD, only Zip Drives, etc, etc.

This wasn't a backup. It was just a place where I uploaded photos and graphics to link to for posting here on the Grumble. I actually have two accounts, one under the shop's name and one under mine. Mine is fine, and some of my postings link to that, but the one that got purged was the one that had the vast majority of the files in it. Many of the files (certainly not all) probably still exist on one of my 3 computers. The thing is, I can't re-upload them because I don't have a list of what was in there.

I don't know if you'll have success or not with a service like that, but try putting your public link to those pictures in at:

http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

This is useful site that takes snapshots of the web and saves them for posterity. I have used it in the past when folks (including grumblers) lost their entire websites, because an ISP failed and no one had backups.

you saying 'they' didnt have their (ie everyone's) stuff backed up??????????????????? and they are charging ya'all $$$$ for the privilege:fire:??? that sure sounds like lawsuit material to me!!! I hardly accept their server(s) went away, their storage went away, and their (at least daily) backups all with south at the same time---absolutely NOT possible! gross mismanagement/criminal negligence

Mike, that is a really COOL site! I typed in my site with a date 2001 and found the first site I put up using Front Page. Even the menu and links worked. This blast from the past made me realize how far we have come with web design. I have my web developer Mike to thank for this.

Sorry about your photos, Rick :-(

Regarding web site backup, we back it up on several computers and two external hard drives at home and work. Trying to keep up with changes made from one computer is sometimes a challenge. We have to remember to download new files to three computers, including this laptop.

Unless they are offering you a backup service which is spelled out in your contract I'm sure they are not doing backups. Providing backups costs money, and no one is going to do them in a commercial venture unless they are getting paid for them.

Right, David. They told me they consider the server space they offer DSL customers for their own personal websites, photos etc. to be a "free service" bonus to having an account with them, therefore they don't feel compelled to support or back them up. They only back up higher-priced business accounts' files.

So, what have been your experiences with alternative posting sites like Snapfish, Photobucket, etc.?

 Rick

I've never had any problem with Photbucket but I'm sure they don't back your stuff up either.

I would suggest that you make a folder on your local computer and edit/copy any online content you want in there. Then upload it to your host site.

Another option is to use Picasa and make an "album" to manage your web images. Basically this creates a "collection" of images that can be individually or mass uploaded to a Picasa Web Album (which can be made public so you can link to the pictures). Picasa doesn't actually duplicate images, just makes links to the originals (on your hard drive) so they don't take up any real extra amount of space. If you ever lost any or all of the images in the web album you could just reload the whole album from your computer.

Just found out that Picasa 3 (beta) has a "web sync" feature, so if you edit a local image that has been uploaded to the web it will be automatically re-loaded to your web album.
