I just purchased a used pneumatic Cassese Underpinner, Model 89 and I'm having trouble with the "top presser bracket" remaining in the low position after I insert a V-nail. Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this problem so the presser bracket will return to the top most position after the nail is inserted?

You just need to make a small adjustment. once the V nail is fully inserted a small spring loaded pin comes into contact with a 1/8" diameter brass button on the pressure release valve. You can see these if you kneel and look under the right side of the underpinner table. One of three things may have happened. Either the bracket holding the actuator pin has moved and the pin is not hitting the valvle button or you may need to adjust the pressure on the pin. The third possibility is that the spring on the pin is broken. If you need more help email me directly. :D

I don't know if I'm going to be much help as I haven't worked on this model for about 7 years but one thing I do remember is that every nut and bolt on this thing has a tendency to work loose then things start to bind up. So the first thing is to go through and tighten everything....and I do mean everything. Check the shaft where it comes through the table for alignment, it may be binding. If it is it may be due to the whole mechanism being loose to the table due to ...guess what...loose screws! Figure on going through and tightening things up at least once a month maybe more. Not really a big job...just a PITA.

oooo, Bob answered while I was typing this and he's right...I had to adjust that a couple of times...it has a tendency to work loose...surprise surprise.

If this is a underpinner where you set the pressure pad height by hand , move the pad down slightly. If it automaticly adjusts to the profile you are using there should be a adjustment . Last if you don't have enough air pressure going to the unit that will cause the pad to stay down after the nail is inserted....
Hope this helps ......Gearold

I have used a Cassese Underpinner, Model cs830 for over fifteen years and never had anything come loose, if none of the above solutions work it might just need a little oil on the pull down bar.

I've never used the 830 and I'm sure you're right that it shows no tendency to loosen up.

Over the years I have used an 88, 2-89's, 3-810's, 2-910's, a 286, and one whose number I forget (OK, so I've had a few jobs). In my experience only the 89 seems to have that problem usually showing up after 3-4 years of use or in one case, 1 year but that's only because they were trying to use it in a production shop. You might try using Locktite to help with the problem.

Please don't take this as a slight to the entire Cassese line. It's not. I have been using Casseses for over 12 years and own one myself. This one model has this one reoccurring problem. The good thing is that it's an easy fix.
