We have a customer who wants to frame a litho that has a personalized message on the back. We immediately suggested either framing it with an opening in the back so he can see the writing, or making a copy and doing a double opening piece. The customer was thinking more along the lines of creating some sort of mirrored monstrosity that would reflect the written message onto another mirror to be seen behind the image... I don't even know if I'm describing this right. I told him that I would TRY to find out if it might work, since he's a nice guy and a good customer. Any ideas or info as to how this might be done (or any other/better/more reasonable ideas on dealing with two-sided art) would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!

Kathy, I think you had it right with your original suggestions.

OR ... you could build a shadowbox with a periscope hanging out the bottom of it.

You are an the right track and either idea of yours should work IMHO. Using mirrors would create a monster. I believe that no matter how many mirrors you use, the message on the back will always be in reverse unless you view it through some type of reversing lens. The Frame would have to be some distance from the wall and lighted as well. Sounds like a real problem. Ive studied a lot of different subjects, but the physics of optics was never a strong point.
Why not install a small wireless pinhole spy camera with an infrared light source, behind the frame, and broadcast the image to a 52 inch plasma screen.
probably not the cheapest solution, but I can almost guarantee that it MIGHT work.

Why not just make a photocopy of the back and frame it side by side. You know....keep it simple....

How do we get it accross to the public that none
of us is Q Branch, with magic levitators and
fiber optic signature translocators?

Jimmy Hoffa, the Ark of the Covenant and the Lost City of Atlantis. You should look sometime.

If your customer wants just to look at the back occasionally, I'd cut back-to-back mats and back the package with acrylic and, obviously, no dust-cover. You could seal the edges with Lineco tape.

If the customer wants to DISPLAY both sides, a good photocopy and two mat windows would be my choice.

ONLY 52"?? I love it! I am going to suggest this.
Thanks for the great replies and support for the original ideas!!

On the back side use Mylar and then cut an opening in the dust cover the size of the message and apply the cover to the mylar around the message and the frame, not so difficult. If you want to make it look a little more finished try pulling the top layer of suede mat off and use that as the cover. A bit of a repeat, but someone did once use a mirror in something but not for the same purpose. Did you check the design forum for a two sided frame.
