Two Frame (three?) - double sided

This is the first of a series I am doing for a private antique document collection.

Some of them will have double sided front frames, but this one does not.

The inside frame is double sided, so the two sided letter from John Adams can be viewed from both sides.

The letter is behind the portrait and plaque to protect it from light when not actually being viewed.

The document itself is encapsulated.

A floater frame is used to cread a "box structure" to contain the second frame. A piano hinge is used to attach the front frame to the face of the floater frame and knife hinges are used on the inside frame at the top and bottom.

Fletcher-Terry's "No Wire" hanging system is used in it's security form. This supports 100lbs with two simple hanging points. A solid mounting to the wall is required because of the cabinet like swinging of the frames, but the collection tends to be moved, so multiple hole hanging systems like z-bar are not wanted by the customer.

Hope the pictures are clear?

Nice work!

Are you and I the only framers routinely using the Fletcher Wireless hanging system? Customers love it.

I'm not sure they (Fletcher) have made it easily available yet?

It is a great system. Security installations are a quick easy job with the markers!

(Do I need one of those disclaimer thingies? -- A customer of mine is one of the owners of F-T and he routinely tests things out on me.)

is that the same system that was called Picture Perfect, made by pp-mfg? I really like that system and have been looking to get more. I am hoping that F-T is selling it through their distributors, ie Donmar. I'd buy it from there in a heart-beat.

Look the framing BTW :)

Yes, the same system. There have been updates and minor improvements since those days.

Good, it was a great system :) Glad to hear it is better.

Next, does DonMar carry it?

I like that the paper is inside and protected further from uv light. Nice concept. Yours? The customers? or was it in an article somewhere?

Not that I know of, yet.

I have been doing work for this customer for some time. We have been framing more "traditionally" with me trying to get him to protect the docs better. Most of his environment is temperature, humidity, and light controled. He finally had a conservator come in and look at a few pieces for repair and the conservator suggested he be more careful, particularly with the ones that will be displayed in the conference room and thus more exposed.

Once he agreed there was a problem, we kind of mutually came up with a solution. (I haven't seen it anywhere else?)

oh, in case anyone is interested, the front frame is 24 x 28.

Does the front/top frame attach to the back other then the hinge? I really like this idea. I could use it for several different customers, none of course protecting anything like this.

Great job and thanks for sharing.

Matt

Only the piano hinge attaches the front frame to the face of the floater frame.

HOWEVER, from experience, I can tell you that the piano hinge itself will bend and the front frame will "droop" over time if not additionally supported.

If you look closely, in the upper corner of the back of the front frame you will see a brass L-bracket that is screwed to the back of the front frame. This bracket has a clear rubber bumpon on the bottom of the extended part. This does two things ... when closed, the rubber gently but firmly holds the face frame shut without the need of latches or magnets, AND, more importantly, it gives the front frame vertical support to prevent sagging of the piano hinge.

M&M stocks the Fletcher-Terry "No Wire" Hanging System

Good to "speak with you" again after all this time! Picture Perfect was acquired by Fletcher-Terry and the wireles hanging system is available from M&M. Go to the Fletcher website and you can viedw the new color catalog.

Uncle Jack!!!

Glad that F-T is working with you. I don't buy from M&M. Seems a shame to have to order one item from them when I can get a truck dropping stuff off from DonMar every week.

Is it an exclusive arrangement with M&M as I buy other F-T stuff from DonMar?
