It's time to get this job done and I haven't decided for sure how I should mount this item.

Customer called and said they had a scrabble board with the wood tiles glued down with names and other family related stuff. When they brought it down, it wasn't on a game "board", but rather a game "sheet of paper" and it didn't quite click in my head that that makes the mounting of it trickier.

Here's 2 photos of it so you know what I've got here.

I was thinking that a heat mount would be very difficult as a tacking iron won't even fit in some of the spaces. I was thinking of heating from behind, but then you still have to put even pressure on it quickly while cooling.

I think that maybe the best bet is crescent perfect mount ps board. I will have to make up a bunch of pieces of foam board to fit all the gaps so that I can put weight on it overnight. But at least with that, I can take my time putting all the filler pieces in place.

What say you?

Wet glue, rebound carpet padding over the board with tiles, a board over that and a bunch of weight.

Upside down in a hotpress might work, the board, adhesive and underside of the piece are all flat

why not just use the holes that are in the corners with some studs, could get come nice wood looking ones to match the tiles

and use foamcore, back and studs to hold

no need to stuck down then

This would be quite a challenge to properly mount. It would be risky and not very dependable. I would give the customer two choices:
1. We can try to mount it as-is, which involves a lot of extra work, extra care and caution, and a $50 additional charge.
2. Bring in another game board like this one. We will permanently mount it to a board and return it to you for re-gluing the tiles.

If they go for #2, you could offer to glue the tiles on, which would take only a few minutes if you have a photograph to map the locations.

If the tiles are the same thickness as foam core, couldn't you lay tracing (or just regular) paper
over it, mark where the tiles are, lay the paper on foam core, and cut through those places?
You could lay that foam core down on the top of this game, to fill up all the depth, lay another
piece of foam core over the top and then mount it to whatever substrate you choose. The weight
would be distributed evenly that way and hold all the paper down.

That probably would make more sense than mounting the paper version, and result in a better looking end product. Buying a new Scrabble set would be cheaper for them than the $50 mounting charge too.

This has given me a couple more ideas to think about. That's good. Thanks.

A new paper board, mounted, would be even better. It wouldn't have the fold seam of the set board.

Before you use any mounting method that involves moisture or heat, you are going to have to know the type of glue that was used to glue the pieces down with and how that would react to either of them.

Myself, I would be on the phone to the customer confessing to my brain fart when I wrote the order and exploring other methods of doing this project. Whatever mounting methods you attempt on it as is, will be little more than experimenting on customers property....any successful outcome will probably be temporary.

The best solution to this is redoing the whole thing after providing the customer with a properly mounted game board. I would offer to mount a new game board at no additional charge.

All of the rest is spending a whole lot of time achieving unknown long term results.

Work with your customer on this issue, be honest, you will probably like the outcome much better than the course you are trying to take now.
