I've been having trouble loading the latest updates from Microsoft lately and I noticed alot of other Grumblers have too. This is a solution to that issue that was sent to me by Microsoft Tech support. Hope it helps. It has only partially cured my problem which appears to go deeper. :(

Recently it is being observed that this is a common issue with users of certain ISP’s. Microsoft is currently researching this issue.

In the meanwhile, we can add the following information to the Hosts file located on the system as a temporary workaround:

1. Click on Start -> Run.

2. Type "C:\Winnt\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts" in the run box (with the quotes) and press Enter.

3. You will be prompted with a "Open With" applet.

4. Select "Notepad" and press "OK".

5. Add the following two entries in the Hosts file (Exactly as mentioned below):

208.172.158.234 download.windowsupdate.com
208.172.158.234 www.download.windowsupdate.com

6. Select File -> Save and then close the file. (Do not select Save As)

7. Restart your system and try accessing the Windows Update Site to download updates
Note: This is a temporary workaround as the Windows Update IP address is dynamic. After installing the updates please remove the two entries that we have added from the Hosts file and please contact your ISP to resolve this issue.
