I need to trim a 24" by 72" poster mounted over sized on 1/2 inch foam. Customer doesn't want a frame.

I have lots of cutting tools but keeping the blade square to the face of the print is difficult.

What is the best tool for trimming this out?

I am always afraid that if I cut the backing to the exact size of the art that it will slide a little when I lower the platen.

I dry mount almost everything on foam board backing that is a little bit larger than the art then trim with a heavy straight edge and a #11 XActo Knife.

I have two such straight edges (a 64” and a 48”): both are reasonably heavy and have a non-slip, webbed lower surface.

Fletcher has them (United Catalog p. 126), but those are a little too short for my taste. Sorry, I cannot remember where I got the the ones I use.

A well honed [one gentle pass will remove all hair on your forearm] Mill Knife, if you are doing it free-hand.

I love the "box cutters" (whatever happened to the term "utility knife"?) that have the extendible snap-off blades. Not only do they make blade changes a snap :icon11: but you can extend them, using more than one section at a time, for cutting deep material. This is also handy for trimming off excess backing the sticks out a bit beyond the glass edge, bec. you can shave it off using the glass as a straightedge. (Wear eye protection.)
I would put the thick item in the wall cutter or under the bar of a straightline mat cutter and use the machine's bar as a straightedge with the extended-blade knife.

Doug: We can trim it on our Keencut! Bring it on over and I could probably get it done while you wait.
Let me know...
