A couple of months ago my moulding order was sent with the wrong freight carrier by mistake. Both freight lines get the shipment here in the same amount of time but this one is always 50% more than my preferred carrier. The moulding was for an order that had to be complete 2 days after the customer placed the order. No problem because it always gets here in one day but there were several pieces being framed. I saw my preferred carrier drive by without stopping so I got worried.

I called and got the shipping info from the moulding rep and found it had gone with the other carrier. I called the carrier and found the shipment was out for delivery and would be here by the end of the day. The woman with the freight line that I was speaking with was at the terminal over an hour away from me. She began asking questions about why framing was so expensive since she was an artist and had several pieces to be framed.

This is where the sales pitch by me began. I first explained how much lower my prices were compared to typical shops. Gave her some pricing and my website address. Hadn't given it a thought for a couple of months now. Today she came in with her art for framing after well over an hour of driving. Since she had driven so far we framed everything while she waited. She showed up a half hour before closing so we had to stay 45 minutes late.

There were 3 oils on canvas that went into ready mades. I also photographed and printed the 3 pieces prior to framing. She had me frame 2 of the 3 prints with double mats in ready mades. While we were doing the framing she picked out 4 stretched canvasses for new paintings she will be painting. She also left a photo to be scanned and printed to be picked up next Saturday. As they were leaving they asked for business cards to pass around when they get back to their home town so I gave them about 50.

Every person we talk to is a potential customer.

Congrats Jeff, well done!

But you should have asked her in the same vein: Why is shipping so expensive (it's just a guy with a truck after all....:p) and in your case: 50% more than the other company!!

Freight is cheap enough but I would like to know why UPS is so insanely priced. Full boxes of moulding cost me less to move than one stick cut in half and shipped UPS. I always buy boxes at leat 5 at a time and the current price is less than $15 per box. UPS on a single stick runs $15 and takes twice as long to arrive.

Now the one carrier being 50% more has cost them my business. Both carriers deliver in the same amount of time. One carrier has higher overhead and therefore has to charge more but that's not my problem.
