How many of you ask the customer for their birthday? Do you send a card or special offer? Also do you have a special program to alert you in advance of these dates?

Thanks!

I've thought about it...but with all the hivvie jivvies now about identity theft, I'd be afraid my customers would taken offense. Maybe, if I thought I was going to be adamant about sending cards I'd ask their birth month.

I don't think one would need the full date, just the month and day. I want to do this so I can get my customers e-mail address. I was told to this from a gift shop owner, a small display with preprinted forms to fill in. It would be free and I want emails so i can send out e-mail specials to those who join. The forms would just be on the counter and anyone who wished could sign up.

another way to get email addresses

I crochet an afgan each summer (something in a solid color of whatever the rage is in house colors). I bring it into the shop in September and everyone that comes in can register for a chance to win it on Christmas Eve. My forms ask for their name, mailing address, city, zip, phone and email address. Rarely is a form completed w/out the email address. If it is, I add them to my snail mail list and send them a quarterly newsletter along with all the folks on my e-newsletter list.

Think of something you could give away. If people like it, they'll register. During the remainder of the year, I have a registration box for an original piece of artwork that is custom framed by me.

The difficult part in doing this my way: many of your customers' names will be in the box repeatedly. Get a high school kid to go through the box and alphabetize the registration forms following the give-away.
