This pencil drawing of a tiger was in a dated looking frame. It had 2” of double mats around it. Top mat was light grey black core with V groove and charcoal bottom mat with 1/4” reveal. The main reason for the reframe was the mat was beginning to burn a brown stripe on the art paper, so I wanted a conservation job.
I went with rag board. The 1/2” reveal of medium grey looks so much softer than the hard dark lines of before and the 1/8” reveal of the upper two mats add depth. The orange-brown frame with the grain and striped patterns works well with the subject. The cockling was already there. I think it adds some character to the piece as in a water color, so I didn't bother to try to reduce it. As a new framer, I think I did okay. I didn't want to over frame this simple piece.
Thanks, John
