I just drill holes around the edge of the spool (on both sides).
I make the holes the same size as the one that is provided on the spool.

Oh I can see that spinning out of control.
You need just the right amount of one way slipping torque with a spring and clutch arrangement. Use an electromagnetic adjustment that is powered by a rechargeable battery.
A real man modification please.

I 'repurposed' a 'puter workstation to make a mobile framing supplies/tools station.
I added open sliding drawers, but the existing sliding drawer for the keyboard makes
a perfect platform for picture wire. Five big woodscrews hold five reels and the loose
end feeds though a screw-eye. 🙂
