Dear Friends,

No one in the entire world can be unaware of the terrible events that occurred Tuesday, September 11 in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania. We echo what has been said by countless people countless times during the past 24 hours now, and doubtless will continue to be said for some time. The thoughts and prayers of all of us at DECOR magazine, DECOR Expo and our parent company, Pfingsten Publishing, are with the victims and families of this unconscionable tragedy, and with our president, who must lead us through this crisis.

It is perversely ironic that this has happened in a month that DECOR chose to celebrate the positive impact and central role that New York plays in the art world. Our September 2001 cover features a beautiful architectural rendering of the New York skyline complete with the stunning new museum planned by the Guggenheim Museums Worldwide for the New York waterfront. Imagine our shock when we realized, after the events of Tuesday subsided a bit, that also featured prominently on the cover amidst the highly recognizable New York skyline were the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

You may have already received your September issue of DECOR, or you may get it in the next few days. We hope that you will receive it in the spirit of celebration originally intended and, perhaps, as a reminder not so much of the devastation and loss of life that occurred in our nation Tuesday, but rather as a reminder of the unquenchable American spirit—a spirit that can not only dream of and build great institutions such as the Guggenheim, but that can also bring us all together in times of adversity.

D.H. Lawrence said that "Tragedy is like strong acid—it dissolves away all but the very gold of truth." And the truth of this situation is already being seen in the singularity of purpose that all Americans are sharing right now: healing our wounds, drawing our loved ones around us and moving ahead.

Sincerely,

John Taff

Mr. Taff,
I would like to say thank you for a well put statement. I am sure that every Grumbler realizes that DECOR's cover can be a wonderful rememberance and not just an awful reminder. God Bless America and The Grumble.

It was eerie to see the cover of this months Decor.

About 10 years ago a friend and I attended Expo. One night we went to the one of the observation decks at the towers. It was truly amazing. Being a baby boomer my self, I had heard all my life about the "magnificent" Empire State Building, yet, when we looked down and saw it below us it looked no bigger that a tooth pick. It is an incredible city.

The destruction of those buildings and the thousands of human lives is beyond comprehension.

I'm glad we have the Decor cover, it helps with the grieving we all have to do.
