Yikes. we are expecting 20 inches of snow. I just heard they may close down the city of Denver to all but essential employees. Dang! None of my suppliers are showing today. Lj at least tried. He even said he would deliver on Saturday if need be. One supplier couldn't give a toss, they couldn't even get my order to me yesterday when it wasn't snowing....................

What to do. What to do. I was planning to spend the night but they are talking this storm not letting up til tomorrow night. Don't think I can do two nights in a row sleeping on my table......plus, if my delvieries don't come tomorrow.....

At this point I have 16 orders due by Saturday that I am waiting on something or another. I don't know what to do. I don't want to disappoint my customers. But, I don't want to be stuck here for 4 days either......

I want to go home......

Call your wonderful customers, explain the situation and GO HOME while you safely can!!

We all want to do what's right for our customers and our business. However, in the scope of life, IT'S ONLY SOMETHING FRAMED THAT WILL BE A TAD LATE. Just take a stroll through a hospital pediatric unit and it will immediately be put into proper perspective.

Merry Christmas Kathy!!

If you don't have the materials to do the jobs then GO HOME!

We're suppose to get some kind of precipitation over the next couple days but they don't seem to know what it's going to be or when it's going to start falling. Originally they said it would start tonight, now it looks like it's be after noon tomorrow. I hope it's not mixed precip. I really hate that!

Kathy, go home. I'm sure your customers will understand. They are going to just as stranded as you.

That is the other part of my dilemma. I'm scared to go home......took me an hour and a half to get here and it was miserable. Total white out conditions at this point, I can't even see across the street. They just announced they were sending all city workers home and they are advising that all shopping malls and business's send their people home. I wonder if I should wait, traffic will be hideous. But, if I wait too long. Heck, I only wore cloth athletic shoes today, what was I thinking? This reminds me of the storm we had in 2003. As any good store owner would, I made an attempt to come in, I did not believe we would get 25 inches of snow. Luckily I came to my senses and came home, I was snowed in for 4 days.

I'm not so worried about me, my car drove like a champ. It is all those other idiots who do not have road worthy cars who are gumming up the works.

I know I am whining, I just can't help myself........................this sucks.

Any nearby stores that can help? Maybe one of them has something you need, and you can return the favor?

If it's any consolation, maybe your customers won't be able to get through to you either.

I'm so sorry! I can't even begin to think how you should handle this! Maybe go home with the unfinished order slips in hand and call everyone from there? The big decision is stay or go home. The completion of the framing without supplies is out of your hands! We're all worrying about you!

Well, I am going home. Wish me luck.........15 lonnnnng miles in bumper to bumper. I am figuring 2 hours minimum. My instinct tells me I do not want to be stuck here. I've got 20 orders to do....surely I can do 10 on Friday and 10 on Saturday.......

That is if my delvieries come. If not, I tried.

See ya on the other side............

I just came in from washing the dog and saw your post and, as I read through all the concerned replies, I was mentally composing a strong rebuttal to "what part of blizzard don't you understand???" but I see that you finally came to your senses and "took the road more travelled". Hey, if you can't move about and your distributors can't move about, how do you suppose your customers are going to move about????? You did what you could to fulfill their orders, so don't even go into the whining room again, OK?

You have been through this all before and you need to remember the lessons learned form past experiences. I seem to remember the last blizzard and how you reacted to it so think back and use what you learned to calm down and take what you should expect for a city in the Rockies.

OK, lecture over, stay safe and stay warm and don't do anything goofy until it's over and safe to go out on the roads again.

Framerguy

I was thinking the same thing Framerguy is....you might be safer staying at the shop, or seeking a nearby hotel room. Having lived in that part of the country once (Aspen) I know how those storms can be and I wouldn't go anywhere...I'd stay put. But I'm sure you're on your way by now.

Sending you safe wishes and keep us posted.

Your customers won't be able to get to you anyway, so no worrying about that!

Who said here: "Nobody ever died from a framing emergency"......??
Darn right! Priorities, girl.....be safe!

Funny, as 'm typing this, Dean Martin's on the radio sining "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow".

Go home, Kathy!

With that much snow there are likely to be power outages. It's going to be easier keeping warm at home than it is at work.

That was scary!

Well, I'm home now. I realized right around mile 4 what a horrible mistake I had made, I should have stayed put. The good news was the roads were deserted. The bad news was the roads were deserted. Cops were pulling people off the road who were not in 4 wheel drive vehicles. The Governor is calling out the National Guard. The white out conditions were so bad I had to put on my sunglasses to see. (I am not kidding)

I have never driven around so many stranded cars in my life. I did really well. I took my time although I was home in less than an hour probably because the streets were deserted. I only spun out a couple times and both times were due to some dope out on the roads in tires that are not fit to be on ice and snow. At one point I could not stop to avoid one of them so I veered down the center and started a new lane. Scary stuff. I have driven in this stuff my whole life and I have never driven in worse conditions than this.

I made it all the way home and discovered the parking lot had not been plowed. With the help of a couple neighbors I used my 4 wheel drive and drove right into a drift to park. I figure I will have wheels again in early March. I'm glad I am home now, whew!

I had two seperate people call and tell me not to worry about their orders....so I am down to 18. But then one guy came in with a photo he has planned on bringing in since October hoping to get by Christmas. So, 19 to go. He even offered if I stayed and finished it today he would drive me home......I said no dice. I was going home.........

Thanks for letting me vent. I am still shaking from that harrowing drive.

Well done Kathy - and here's me worrying that I didn't reverse the car in to the drive tonight - you see - if it freezes (it will) and I have reversed in, the sun catches the windscreen at about 0830 and by the time we are ready for our 4 min drive to work - it's defrosted!

Keep warm!

YAY!

Whew!! Glad you made it home safely. I was holding my breath!

Glad to hear you made it home OK, Nanook.

Now you will have the time to read my worst joke. I am preparing a most disgusting and laughless joke for the Christmas season, it just makes me cringe thinking about the final punch line!!

Keep your eyes open and a bucket handy, I am coming soon.

Wow Kathy! Just got in from work and began reading your post. Found myself biting my nails (haven't done that in 35 years) as I continued reading and hoping you'd get home safely. Thankfully, by the time I finished reading the entire thread, you arrived home!

Call your customers. They'll understand and realize they chose a smart framer to do their work!

Janet

All right, you go girl! Warm robe, fuzzy slippers, big cup of hot chocolate...Life is good!

Phew, that's a relief! I was looking at the news reports and they said New Mexico got hit pretty hard in some areas yesterday and Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska were going to get it today and tomorrow. Stay put till they get it cleared. It looks like your on the backside of a classic "Panhandle Hooker." ( A winter storm that dips down to the panhandle of Texas, picks up a ton of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and then "hooks" north toward the Great Lakes, dumping snow and freezing precip along the way.)

Anne,
Have you been here before? (Texas Panhandle)
You are right on about the hookers.... I mean Panhandle Hooker... Uh.. about the weather in these here parts. Been a wet few days with "Thunder Snow" last night.

Hope the weather clears and you can get back to work. If not the decent customers will understand when there is no delivery and the whole city is shut down.

Do you have an emergency supply of food/water and warm clothes and sleeping bag at work? If not it sounds like it would be a good idea to lay in a supply. Get some rest Friday and Saturday could be long days.

Kathy - I'm glad you made it home - gotta take care of the kitties - right?

Whenever this situation happens in Buffalo (every year!) I head for home knowing if I can't get to the shop neither can the customers! Espcecially when they issue driving bans.

So relax, enjoy, take pictures - hug the kitties!

BTW - my vinca is blossoming!!! In December!!! Perfect little putple blossoms! Amazing.

Glad you arrived home safe and sound, Kathy. I was watching the news this morning as saw how much snow Colorado had received. I knew there must be some Grumblers from that area (just couldn't remember exactly which ones at the time) and was hoping all were safe.

I would have been absolutely terrified driving in those conditions. I hate driving when it there are only flurries.

I'm glad you made it home safely Kathy.

Next time there is a storm like that on the way don't go to work!

Sheesh!

The report I heard said Denver experienced hurricane force winds yesterday. That means stay at home and batton down the hatches.

Good luck getting your car out of the snow drift on Friday!

The governor of Colorado declared the eastern half of the state in a state of emergency and called out the National Guard to help stranded travelers. Even the Post Office stopped delivering. They said they would probably have to add Sunday delivery to make up for the backlog but for now they felt conditions were too bad to even allow their people out.

The snow was expected to let up by noon today. We're starting to get rain and sleet here on the other side of the same storm system. I just hope we don't get icy roads. I'd rather drive in snow than on icy roads!

this story was a nail bite -er - I thought I could heard Orson Wells voice reading the story in my head. I'm glad you made it home safely.

Can you send a bit of that snow to green grass Minnesota? We are gettin grain at the moment, it will turn to sleet, and maybe we will have 2" of slush in the morning.

This brought back a memory I'd not thought about in a long tim.I once
managed a Perskins restaurant in Sioux Falls SD and had a storm come thru. All the employees worked 46hrs straight as we couldn't go home, and the customers couldn't leave.... But we had food and coffee.....We set a company record for longest straight hours worked.

Again, you are home safe. THAT's what matters.

And you did have the "act of God clause" on your receipt - right!!

Merry christmas.

Glad you are safe and warm Kathy.
One of my wife's coworkers is spending the last of her vacation (with hubby and 2 teenage daughters) in the Denver airport. No ground transportation, no hotel rooms...
I was thinking that, if you stayed at work and lost power, you might end up an emibubsicle. You made the right decision, just a little later than you should have.

This is why I had a backup generator put in at the house last year. It runs off of my Propane tanks and comes on within 20 seconds of the power going out. The last outage lasted about 3 hours and I was still warm and comfy in my house while the rest of the neighborhood was pitch black.

Of course, I did it for the cats!!! Don't want them to freeze, doncha know!:faintthud:

In the dark and c-c-cold???

Hmmmm....speaking of power outages, we've not heard from our Adventerous Kathy for 16 hours now

OH YOOHOO, EMIBUB! You okay over there???

I was thinking about you last night. I am happy you made it safely home.

We have zero snow here, with none in the forcast. Any precipitation would be rain anyhow. I feel sorry for the people who rely on snow to make a living.

Kathy,
We are happy you made it home safe and sound. Sounds like a good place to be right now. String some pop- corn with cranberries and hang them in your trees for the birds, they love it, and its a cool Christmas thing to do... Be safe, and Merry Christmas...

I've been shoveling all morning. Thank goodness it is a powdery snow. I just shoveled a big "U" around my car and will hope the plows come through by tomorrow. Somebody ventured out to the road to see and I guess the plow is broken down.

They showed a lot of the vehicle carnage on the news. I can't believe I actually drove through it all. People were driving head on into 6 foot drifts because of the snow blindness, you could not tell the dif between the road and a drift. I think my sunglasses may have saved me. The worst was a 5 mile stretch of road with a lot of fields and open spaces, it is a huge road 3 lanes on either side. The snow was blowing sideways and visibility was maybe 10 feet. I saw one guy smack into an abandoned car. I saw the car I am not sure why he didn't. I followed tail lights hoping I was still on the road. When I lost those tail lights I realized I was the leader of the pack.......scary.

I went to work yesterday with the intention of spending the night, I think that is why I was so ill prepared. When I went to my morning job at 6AM there was no need for boots. By the time I was done there it was a different story. I almost went home but it occured to me that I still had to order supplies for orders taken since Saturday, so I thought I had to at least go in to get those ordered just by the chance I could get them maybe by Friday. I put all my faith in LJ and ordered everything from them.....Then I spent the next 2 hours debating whether to go home or not.

This storm is worse than the one we had in March 2003. Mainly because it is December and colder. Somebody said hurricane force winds and I believe it, #### it was cold. It is also worse because it is Christmas and I feel obligated to come thorugh for my customers. But I also realize it is out of my hands.

Thanks for all your concern fellow Grumblers. I am happy to be home safe and warm!

I'll drink to THAT!!

My LJ driver is late. The mountain passes are closed due to heavy snow and no visibility and he has to come that way. Sometimes he comes over the night before. I hope this is on of those times, as I have about 12 orders worth of materials on that truck.

And, of course, concern for Jason, our driver. I have a Christmas present waiting for him. I hope he makes it okay....for all our sakes!

The shop window is Christmas painted, says "Let it Snow!!"......I changed my mind.

Robo...in the Company Snowplow, silly!

YAY! Jason (LJ driver) made it in, barely, roads are closed or chain requirements in and out of here, but nothing like you guys had (have?) out there in Colorado. I had a customer pick up an order on the way to the airport headed to Denver, not sure they'd be able to land there....doubtful, eh?

Hey, a few days ago everyone was complaining that it didn't feel like Christmas because of no snow.....
Does it feel like Christmas now??????

Our LJ driver is like the mailman.....neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor dark of night keeps him from delivering Christmas presents (material).

Hey Kathy........

How's about releasing our Phoenix Suns!?!? Or let them out of their hotel to walk about the town - they are SO HOT :fire:, they'd melt the snow in no time!!

Hi Kathy,

Glad everything is OK. I've been reading this thread with a personal interest. My stepdaughter and her husband just moved to Aurora about 6 months ago when hubby got a promotion (they live on Ouray Circle). She wasn't sure how she was going to like the weather. After the last couple of days she's REALLY not sure if she's going to like it!!!

Stay warm and enjoy the days off!

Jerry S.

Val, it might feel like Christams where you are, but it still doesn't feel like Christmas here.

This is New England for cryin' out loud. It isn't supposed to be in the 50's in late December! Today was a gorgeous spring-like day.

And this is the gorgeous South, for cryin' out loud! Mid to upper 70's today, and 64 as I'm typing this at 2:25 am. Ya gotta love it! :######:
