Trying to find out the best system for the shop so I can hear it in the back room. What are you using?
Thank you.

I think mine is the same as Ricks, picked it up at the local Radio Shack. My security system has an annunciator, but it is so high pitched that I can't hear it. It does set off the poodle who has a baritone bark I can hear quite easily.

On both the front and back doors, we use photoelectric (LED) sensors with reflectors. That is, the unit emits an LED signal that is returned to the unit by the reflector. When the signal is broken the annunciator chimes. Both units are connected to a very shrill Piezoelectric siren the can be heard anywhere in the building, even when the saws and dust collector are running.

This sort of system is handy because it works whether the doors are open or closed. The back room unit's LED signal spans the entire 20 ft. width of the building, which covers the overhead doorway as well as the regular doorway.

The only downside is that if someone stands in the doorway, the chime continues until they stop breaking the signal. Occasionally, kids like to make it beep for play.

All of the components came from Radio Shack years ago, but I'm not sure they are still available.

If your shop has an alarm, it's usually just a setting to turn the door chime on - so it will beep from all keypads when any outside door is opened.

That's what we do in our shop.

The magnetic ones don't reliably work for shops over 700sf or so. I had one in my last shop that was 1,200sf, placed about halfway down about 600sf in. Not too obstructed. Would "bing" about 1/3 of the time. I got a new one, and the same unreliability. I moved and the same thing.

The last thing you want is to rely on something unreliable.

I would LOVE to find a way to have a strobe one. They sell wireless entry alarms, and wireless strobe doorbells, but not wireless strobe entry chimes. In my old shop if I was cutting way in the back I had a "Please press this button so I know you are here, and it would send the signal wirelessly from the counter to my saw where it would strobe.

I'm actively looking for a WIRED way to do this (aside from an alarm) or a reliable wireless way.

The keypad is in the front room and not very loud. And that's the problem I can't hear it.

Ah ok. At home I have a chime that goes off in the kitchen, when motion is detected in the yard or driveway.

For that one, I'm using products from x10.com The signal goes through the electrical wiring of the house, so there's no max distance.

Perhaps that could be a solution.

In my old shop I had a regular 'break the beam' door alarm. An electrician fitted it with a relay that turned a light bulb on in the workshop that was 120 feet away so that if we had a machine going (there were lots of them) we would see the light and recognise that someone had entered the unattended shop.

It was very annoying when we discovered that a person who entered the shop was seeking directions to some unrelated location in town!

I actually have a self-contained chime unit mounted at the top of the front door. The unit I posted above is a backup that chimes wirelessly in the back room in case I don't hear the other one.

Our back door creaks. This only works if it is closed. On the pleasant days, it is always open and so the customers often ambush us. But they are coming through the back door, and we are out front, working and near the design tables and the cash register, so we don't worry. Since we are right out front, working in our separated-from-customer-work space, we see immediately those customers coming in through the front door. On the other hand, both doors have bells hanging from them, though they don't really jingle the way I'd like them to. I have to find the right position for them to work properly. Our security system has the chime included, but it is so quiet, we don't even bother.

I've used "Mr. Chime" products for many years. www.mrchime.com
It's a wireless, battery operated door transmitter and you can put the receiver wherever you need it to hear it.

Sleigh bells work very well on my front door but when the Pistorius is running I can't hear them. I have a long mirror in the corner of the saw room that allows me to see the door while on the saw or the v-nailer. When the Frame Square saw is running I can hear the sleigh bells.

I have the alarm system like Mike's but I also use a baby monitor, because my workshop is the basement, I can see who is coming, postman, UPS, friends or customer and decide if they are worth a trip up the stairs. The other nice thing about is I can listen and watch people if I have to run downstairs to wrap something.

We use their wireless DA4D. The sound of the chime is adjustable via a dial from off to ear piercing. It uses some type of motion sensor and we have it mounted above our entry door; it's been very reliable for the 2-3 years we've had it.

In addition to the alarm, we have a CCTV system set up with a large screen over the CMC. (back room)

From the back we can see the parking areas, and the full customer/retail area. (4 cameras) We see the car as it is parking, and know to finish up and get out to the front counter. If we have to go into the back to re-fit or repair something, while the customer waits, we can keep an eye on them and the store.

These systems are cheap to buy, and easy to install. They strongly discourage robberies and shoplifting, IMO.

I don’t have an electronic bell, but when I first opened, someone gave me an old fashioned shop bell as a gift

Mine is a little less ornate than this one, but screwed into my front door is is surprising loud (and a bit annoying when we’re busy). I can hear it from our loading dock when the back door is open. Many people comment on it – it is a good conversation starter.

However, when I’m using the saw with ear protectors, I cannot hear it – or anything else for that matter.
