Is anyone else as bothered as I am becoming by what I feel is the vast overuse of the Quote Button???

I mean, this is not prime time television here on the grumble - we are professionals - we can all read - we don't have one-second attention spans so unless you are writing a great long post - do you really need to QUOTE the previous poster???

Posting on a thread is like a conversation between and amongst several or many people. I think most of us can follow a conversation without quoting the previous speaker's thoughts verbatim. We do not do this when we are speaking out loud - why oh why should we do it in here???

This is driving me absolutely up the wall! :icon45:

It's ok in moderation, just to grab the main point or question :)

It gets abused a bit on HH. People quote entire quotes, containing sub quotes.

I think a good rule of thumb is to keep the quote considerably shorter than the reply.

I tend to do it when I want to be sure people understand what I am responding to. I know y'all get tired working so hard, so I want to make things easy for you.
 
I don't care for unneeded quotes either, Mar, it is redundant and unnecessary in most cases. If you want to respond to a particular point in a post, you don't need to quote the entire post, we can figure out where it came from. There is also a "delete" button on your keyboard that will take away any highlighted text so you are left with the important part of the quoted post. If you don't know how to do this, I suggest an adult ed. course in basic computer education at your local library or community college! :help:

Of course I don't care much for many of the totally obscure posts that were meant to be either funny or insightful but appear to be simply mumbo jumbo. Creative insight is in the eye of the author most times and the rest of us just scratch our heads and mutter, "Huh???" :nuts: (Closest I could get to scratching my head!)

But these occur on most any forum that you care to visit. Be very thankful we don't have a bunch of idiots that punch the "Submit" key over and over when their post doesn't show up immediately!! Now THAT is irritating to me!!!! There is a fishing forum here on the Panhandle that must be operated by a bunch of highschool kids!! They don't know how to delete multiple postings of a reply nor do they ever wait for their slooooooow computers to get the job done with processing their replies and getting them to appear on their screen!! And the moderators apparently aren't aware of their powers to take care of this situation. Most of it comes from an overburdened server and too little operating space but they just let it continue. If it wasn't for some hot tips on close-in area fishing, I would never go there as it isn't worth the time to filter out the crap and repetition from the good info.

Lets deactivate the quote button. It would make the Grumble a better forum and EASIER to follow.

If you really needed to quote you could always type it out.

I think judicial use of quotes is very helpful especially if responding to a post several steps back. I agree that people need to learn how to only use that portion of someone else's post which is relavent to what they want to respond to.

There's no reason in most cases to quote an entire post.

I agree that there seems to be a lot of overuse of the quote function but if it really bothers you, just skip that part of the post.
No one says you have to read it all.
 
It works if you use it as it was designed!

It's not really overuse....as much as it is misuse, IMHO.

The written word is often without tone, and character. That combined with threads going into multiple directions, makes the Quote Button a tool to be used wisely.

Learn to use the quote to capture the essence of what you're trying to refute or support. Keep the quote to one or two sentences....maximum.

If you don't know how to do this, then don't don't use this feature until you learn....simple good bulletin board edicate. :thumbsup:

............... OK, I skipped the stuff up there and came directly down here to say something but now I forget what it was I wanted to say. I would peek but that would prove me a hypocrite so I'll just sit here and wonder, possibly for the rest of my natural born days, what I wanted to impart on Deb as food for thought for this Easter Sunday???

Well, in lieu of nothing else popping into my mind, Happy Easter Deb!!!


 
I agree with the suggestion that if you are going to use the quote feature, highlight and delete all but the part to which you are referring. Otherwise it uses a lot of bandwidth, and starts to look like an email reply to a reply to a reply where no one has eliminated the original text.:nuts:

P.S. I remember when the smilies first came along I thought they would be the ruination of the G... Fortunately, most people are reasonable with them, and I've grown to like them.

What a great idea for the holidays, and I agree completely. My design table is not big enough, though. Where did you put yours?
 
Point taken, Jim, But in my experience The Grumble is one of the most disciplined forum that I participate in with regard to quotes. There is one I've seen where the idiots quote 50 line posts with 50 line posts inside, and so on.
 
The Grumble is definitely more disciplined with the use of quotes. I've seen forums where people will take a long post, quote it, break the quote into individual lines, and respond to each line. I haven't seen too many people here tear each other apart like that.
 
When a post makes sense without quoting, then quoting is unnecessary. But when a typical reader can not determine what the post is about, quoting is a valuable feature.

In any case, it is rarely necessary to quote everything -- a snippet will do. In replies where several questions/statements are answered, then line-by-line quoting may be needed for it to be sensible.

On The G it is usually easy to scroll back up and see the original statement. But on HH and some other forums, a blind reply may be absolutely worthless. The HH archives contain a lot of execellent answers to questions that will never be known to someone searching later.

Not really, but I am going to move this to the general forum since it really has nothing to do with business issues, and I really haven't anything better to do today than move it.
 
Uh, Wally - thanks for moving the thread but did anyone notice that Jim triple posted and about a half an hour ago I tried a two word response in the Quick Reply and after about 20 minutes it still hadn't posted (although it said it was and the little circle kept going around and around)...

Let's see what happens now...

OK - I am editing this to say (*nevermind*) it posted afterall!
 
I triple posted! Wow. That's embarrassing.

Mike, can you make a couple of the flubs on this 40x60 black suede mat go away as easily? They really show up under the Museum Glass.

Then you can finish the task of making ME happy.

Fortunately for me, sarcasm is perfectly acceptable.

Me too!

Many times, due to the time differences in different countries it is necessary to quote from a post that is many posts back in a thread, because the reply might not make sense otherwise.

I could not agree more Meci.................if they need it in green to know it is sarcasm clearly they don't get sarcasm. What is the point?

I like Jay H's posts.

If I am replying to the most recent post in the thread, I don't quote, or I cut and paste to reference part of the previous post.

Otherwise, I quote, but try to remove all but the specific comments I'm responding to.

Nonetheless, I'd rather see a quote that I don't need and can scroll past, than have no quote and be left with no clue what the poster is talking about.
