The Difference between Fletcher Terry Matt Cutters and Multi Cutters

When people refer to a mat-cutter, they refer to a device for cutting windows in mats. Fletcher Terry makes these devices, but it also makes a multi-material cutter designed to cut glass, plexi, matboard, foamboard, etc. The multi-material cutter is not designed to cut mat windows.

Does that help?

Hi, Mat cutters sit on a flat surface such as your worktable. The multi cutter is mounted against the wall. The multi can hold different cutting wheels, e.g. one for mats, one for glass, one for plexi. A multi cuts the overall piece to the desired dimensions. The mat cutter cuts the mat opening. :-)

Both cutters are used for different purposes. The mat cutter cuts window in mat at 45 degrees. On the 2000 series cutter you can also cut 90 degrees for outside dimensions. Generally glass can't be cut on these cutter though I have heard of people cutting glass using the 90 degree side as the staight edge and a hand glass cutter.

The multi purpose cutter is used to cut outside deminsions in 99.99 percent of the cases when cutting mat board or foam core. You cannot not cut at a 45 degree with this cutter unless it is really worn out (had one like that ;)) When cutting acrylic or glass it is used only for cutting the outside dimensions.

Most shops have both the wall multi purpose cutter and a mat cutter.
