I can't find Orton's post on mounting Tapa cloth, but assume it should be hinged using Japanese paper & starch paste. Please correct me if I am wrong!

I have a Tapa cloth to frame which is extremely buckled. When the edges are held down by hand, there are bumps in it about 1.5 inches high. I need some suggestions on what to do with it please?

I had my first come in years ago and contacted conservators in Hawaii regarding this...should be in the archives somewhere...Japanese hinging is best. At the time, I thought couching the piece, given its almost fabric-like quality. You'll need to use something other than existing 1/4" spacers to keep it away from the glass...maybe multiple mats with spacing between each? Create some dimension and added drama to the piece!

Osgood, I have framed quite a few of these over the years. I've always sewn them in position using a cotton thread that is a very dark redish brown. I also use a commercial steamer, the kind that is used by drapery installers, to get the folds out and to get the Tapa to lay flat. The steamers can be purchased from most retail supply companies and run from $100.00 to $400.00. Always use distilled water, your steamers life will be greatly extended. I've always floated them on top of another fabric rather than just plain mat board.

Thanks Cheryl and John for your replies. They have been very helpful. Especially the steamer idea!
