I have encapsulated 3 chinese cutout pieces. Especially when pressure is applied to the glass swirls (like dish soap in water) appear between the film and the glass. Any experience with this and/or comments?

Judy is right, Judy.

You need to keep the surface of the glass off the Melanex or Mylar so those halos or "rainbows" don't show up when the 2 surfaces come together. Econospace or some such spacer will solve all your "soapy" problems.

Newton Rings?

Yes, Newton rings; that result from the two surfaces coming close enough to interfere with
the light passing through them. If a spacer will
allow the polyester film to move, too much, and
since the affected area is outside the encapsulation, the lightest possible application
of talc on the inside of the glass may keep the
surfaces from coming too close, without being
visible, itself.

The air gap not only eliminates the problem you have seen, but it also provides insulation for the mounted item.

The air gap in a frame works like the gap between panes of a double-pane window; it insulates.

The purpose is to defeat condensation. If your Melinex mount is pressing against the glass, then condensation could form inside the glass, and possibly even inside the clear film mount. Clear film is a very poor insulator.
