I have a client bringing in several swim medals. She mentioned she may want a shadowbox. Any suggestions from the framing gods so I can act like I know what I'm doing when she comes in!

I recently framed ten large medals, which the customer earned for running marathons. They were large and heavy, with fabric neck straps attached.

The medals were mounted in two rows of five, with clear film straps, to a piece of 4-ply matboard. The fabric straps of the bottom row's medals were pulled through a horizontal slot to the back of the board. The top row's fabric straps were folded over the top edge of the mount board. All were secured to the back with clear film jackets, taped in place.

A top mat was cut with two rectangular openings that show the medals and about 2" of the fabric straps. Also, a 1/2" x 2" caption opening was cut under each medal, for the marathon's date & time. The band of mat across the middle, between the two openings, covers the straps' slot in the board. Spacers under the top mat accommodated the medals' thickness.

Pay attention, Sandy. Jim is really good at acting like he knows what he's doing.

whew! I hope hers arent so complicated! Where do I get clear film strips and film jackets?? Would love to see a pic of yours! Thanks, Jim! Will probably have more questions...so don't go too far!

I have pics. When I get back to the shop later today, I'll send some of them to Ron, and he can post them. OK, Ron? You know how computer almost-illiterate I am...

The asphalt mat looks great Jim. Very marathon.

Sandy, I think you aught to use an Aqua mat for swimming..... :D

Maybe even water color paper . . .

What the hey! Just wade on in and sink yourself into the idea pond.

What great pictures. Now, your description makes sense.Opps, not that it didn't before, but remember this is all new to me! Thanks, Ron for posting these, it looks great. What do you think, Baer, should I throw in some of those little swim goggles for effect! I really like the way you combined the ones without ribbons with the ones that have them. I'm ready for her to bring them in now. At least I can try to sound intelligent when approaching the project! Thanks, you guys!

As long as you're framing 'em, Baer, and not wearing them around the shop.

There have been discussions, either here or on HH or both, about framing swim caps.

I always ask if they have a team or individual photo they might like to include in the presentation to help personalize it. You can mount a photo and make a tiny frame for it out of fillet stock. (People are always wanting to use fillets for frames, anyway. This is their chance.)
