Get The Picture
We do a monthly survey on the grumble, and I'm running out of ideas :)

Here are the ideas that have already been used: http://www.custompictureframing.com/poll_results.htm

Keep in mind that the survey software is very simple. It can only ask one question, and the answers have to either be single choice or multiple choice.

Thanks in advance for your future survey/poll ideas!

You could do one on the “geographical” area/spread (ie: customer distance from the shop/business)

It could be in miles from the business and have an option if the business also has internet sales for framing.

How much of business is other than framing!!!

ie: print sales, arts and crafts, artist materials, "mats only", etc, etc, etc.

One that would be interesting to me is if and why they changed framing POS software from one vendor to a different vendor.

And how many mats are typically used on a frame order...and how frequently are mats used as opposed to no mats...% of metal frames sold compared to wood...% of male employees vs female employees...% of male owners vs female owners...

I'd be interested in seeing some of the previous years (2 or more ago) questions again with a comparison as to how the answers have changed.

Excellent ideas so far! Thanks folks. Keep em coming.

I write them all down in a document, which I pool from at the first of every month.

Remember the format is a single question, with either a single answer or multiple choice answers. It can't handle sub questions.

Mike,

You could do average frame size/quantity per order

Or customer profile: % of craggy old rich ladies vs. bachelors!

Or timely political threads, like:
The recession has/will affect me:
-Not much and won't change
-A little and might change
-Off about 30%, returning to normal in 6 months
-Down a lot, but will increase again faster than in other markets
-Terribly and will never recover

Or:
Who's the blame for the increase of internet sales of custom framing:
A. Al Gore
B. Al Gore
C. Al Gore
D. Al Gore
E. All of the Above

:) Thanks for an awesome place to hang out!

Quotes vs. Sales

How many Quotes are not approved versus the ones that turn into a Sale?

ie 1 dead-end quote vs 10 approved = 10%

less than 2%
2 - 5%
6 - 10%
11 - 20%
21 - 40%
41 - 70%
over 71%

Will you participate in a survey?

a yes
b no

How many other frame shops (including home based) have you visited in the last year?

I'm always curious about market research. Another would be:

What % of gross sales do you spend on advertising?

And finally:

How often do you attend trade shows for your business.

Good ones! :) thx

Do you cooperate with your local competitors ..help out if necessary?

Change in gross sales over the last year. July to July.
Change in average ticket over the same time period.
Average dollars per UI
Price of 24 x 36 poster special with wood or metal frame
Average price of value line frame
Average cost per ft of value line or poster special frame
Trainee Wage
Manager wage
Total wage expense as a percentage of gross sales.
Gross sales per sq. ft.
Gross sales per full time employee

Thanks for the great ideas, folks!

I put 13 of them into the future poll queue:

Rich Darling: How many competitors do you have in x miles from your shop?
Framing: % of business for framing vs other (art sales, craft sales, prints, art, mats, etc)
Janis: % of frames that are metal
YLVA: What is your shop's COGS goal? (Cost of goods sold)
Robo: How many reps do you see per month?
HB: How many quotes that you give turn into sales? (percent ranges)
cwiser: How many pieces does your shop produce per month?
jwb9999999: How many other frame shops (including home based) have you visited in the past year?
jwb9999999: what % of gross sales do you spend on marketing?
jwb9999999: How often do you attend major trade shows?
Kirstie: Price of 24x36 post special
Kirstie: Gross sales per sf
Coutures Gallery: Do you cooperate with your local competitors? Help each other if nec?

JwB999999 - or a variation thereof: It would be interesting to know which of the trade shows framers decide to attend, and why. Also, it would be interesting to know what the average cost of attending a show was. For years I've wanted to go to a show, but when I was putting my business together - every extra penny went into the business.

Suggest a fun sort of pole re make up of family members in the business:

1 No other family member in the business (Female)
2 No other family member in the business (Male)
3 Husband and wife
4 Mother and son
5 Mother and daughter
6 Father and daughter
7 Father and son
8 Life partners
9 Brother and brother
10 Sister and brother
11 Sister and sister

I have no doubt I have missed some combinations of family members, please feel free to add to the list.

Do you do canvas gallery wraps? (see currect Giclee Damage thread)
Sounds like some are opting out because of inadequate giclee pocessing, poor canvas and/or bad inks/sealants.

And some say they are in the FRAMING business for a reason!! To frame, not wrap!
