Visions Custom Picture Frames
I have a customer who brought me an original canvas, costly but not hugely expensive. Her husband was framing it as a surprise for his wife and asked me to put glass over it (we discussed the pros and cons and he decided he wanted museum glass). The wife then called me and asked me to take off the glass. The canvas is not stretched, the painting is to the edge of the canvas so I used ATG around the very edge of the canvas to keep it from falling through frame. Now it isn't laying flat in the frame. It's in a hallway where people walk past it and it waves as they pass. We don't want to glue it down for value reasons. So... I am at a loss as to what I can do to hold it flat against the backboard.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

I take it the customer wants to be able to see every square inch of an image painted all the way to the edge of the canvas. If that's the case, the painting will have to mounted to a larger canvas and then stretched. This is job for a conservator. Find one to recommend and wait for the painting to come back to you for framing.

You could strip line it with Beva strips
That would be the proper way to add extra canvas around the outside to permit stretching without losing any of the image.
This process requires training and special materials, as well as practice (not on customer's property).
A conservator would be able to provide this service, as Bruce suggested.
I hope you can get that ATG off the back.

Strip line it with BEVA, stretch on a professional quality stretcher, (not strainer), fit a backing board then it could be hung unframed or frame it in a float frame. (Please dispose of the ATG tape. In my opinion it should not be used on artworks).

Hi Valerie, find a conservator, I would offer to do it for you but Im not in your area any longer and retired.
Might I suggest a trip to Vegas to the West Coast Art and Frame Convention in January. There you can treat your self to and array of educational classes including how to do Beva Strips, really not that difficult. Plus it's an awesome place to visit.
Glad to see you on this site, it's Wonderfull as are the people.
Take Care
Dave
