I was wondering what spray mounts that you use for a cold press machine. Thanks

I use Super 77 Spray for cold mounts when necessary. I use it on photography if I am unsure of the processing method. Also, I use it on items like chalk, kids artwork that could change in a heat process, etc. Anything that could be altered by heat.

If you are keeping just those 2 choices, I use both of them.

On large pieces, I use Vacu-mount as it has a longer open time and I can get a good bubble free mount on things like very large laminated maps and such.

MOst times I go with a heat mount though and mounting tissues.

Jay Goltz turned me on to the 3M Pro-Spray water-based mounting adhesive system, and I never touched Super 77 again. No spray booth. No added liability (just wait 'till your insurer finds out you have a spray booth!).

The system is in the new United catalog, page 119.

I agree...the 3M system is awesome! I just had to mount and frame 15 photographs most of which were 30" x 40". Using the 3M system was easy, no smell, minimal overspray and no trip to the emergency room for a lung transplant.

It took a couple of practice sessions to get the rhythm of the spray just right, then it was an easy job.

I used to do a pretty lively business "repairing" photos that had been mounted with 77 in a cold press. Six months or so after mounting, huge bubbles would appear and I would put the mounted prints in my heat press. This would "reactivate" the adhesive and get the prints flat, but I am fairly sure the fix was a temporary one.

The shop I used to do this for bought a combination heat press and they haven't been back.

I'd feel a lot better about the Pro Spray system than anything that comes in a aerosol can.

Jack Cee echoes my view that the 77 is much more agressive. It's my choice for hand-mounting (no press) and some fabrics or other unusual textures, but the Vac-U-Mount is optimised for the vacuum press: because it's not sticky, the paper being mounted has a chance to smooth itself out as it comes up against the glass platen. You can watch it happen.
The real beauty of Vac-U-Mount is when you have a multiple-opening mat and you want the technical and time-motion advantages of putting all the artwork on one substrate, in one trip through the press. Again, because the work's not too sticky, you can use the mat as a positioning template and futz around for several minutes getting all the elements placed just so. When the mount comes out you slap the mat on it and you're good to go.
