I am mounting in a shadow box some babies' clothing and would like to hear how others create a subtle 3-D look.

The cotton clothing is rather thin so that the black suede background shows through slightly. Any form and/or stuffing I do will have to fill in the clothing completely (sleeves, lacy parts) or the black will show through, albeit only slightly, where the stuffing isn't.

I am interested in how experienced shadow boxers stuff their shadow box clothes, generally, so that they (the clothes) do don't look steamrollered into a frame.

I forgot to say please.

Mel, I've used quilters batting in general, to stuff stuff. In the lacy parts you may need to line it with gause first so the fibers don't sprout out. The batting separates easily into layers for the thickness you desire. Those are my favorite framing projects...tweeking for just the right texture.

Crumpled nylon net might give you more of a translucent look, if that's where you're aiming. The kind used for bridal veils and petticoats (not the kind used to cover strawberries so the birds don't eat them) is available in most fabric stores and comes in a wide range of colors. Organza works well, too, but is difficult to find in any color besides white or black. Kit

Or tulle, and I think it comes in all the neutrals. Somewhere someone also suggested acid-free tissue paper.

Have you ever seen one overdone? Looks like Chucky.

Is there any reason why you have to use black as the background. Sounds to me that the clothing is soft, so I would not consider using a harsh colour like black as the background. Perhaps a darker shade of whatever the clothing is, would be a solution.
You should be able to use dacron to stuff it with!

Osgood, I'm with you. Black seems as though it would make the piece look like a memorial to the child. But as we know, customers have strange tastes.

Thanks, I was hoping for a variety of ideas and got them.

As for the black, that's what she wanted, and because they are white baby dresses with bits of pink trim, it does look, uh, striking. The black could be considered appropriate because of the heavy Victorian, nearly black, oval mouldings my customer felt was the only "right" way to go for her large Victorian house

On the one I have done so far, I used lightweight, semi-transparent, 100% polyester pellon lining. I tried batting, but what I had on hand made the dress too puffy and too opaque. The tulle and netting would work very well on these, I think, due to the slight transparency it became obvious was necessary.

And you're right, Osgood and Janet. They do look like memorials--clothing, picture, engraved spoon, silver plaque with name, birthdate, birth time, and birth weight.

It may help you to understand if I tell you this customer's living room has walls the color of Pepto-Bismol. :****** :

Framer! Even after taking out that extra space, the s h u t u p smilie has been censored.

Pleaseeeeeeee....what is Pepto-Bristol ?.

The reason I ask is when we moved into our house two years ago one room had black wallpaper with hints of pink roses.....it was dreadful, I just want to find out if there is some thing worse than what we had to face, needless to say it is now changed and has being decorated by my wife for our 5 year old boy, multicolor trains border, bright walls etc.

Thanks

Pepto-Bismal is an over-the-counter upset stomach remedy. It tastes like tea berries and is the brightest, most vile pink color imaginable.

Tea berries are the fruit of the wintergreen plant.

Wintergreen is an ericaceous shrub whose leaves yeild an aromatic oil used in flavorings.

Ericacious means related to azaleas, trailing arbutis, rhododrendon, and laurel.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Guy's I get the "color" "picture"........now that you describe Pepto-Bismal I know what it is, I figured that when they made that stuff they made it that color, so it would take your mind off your upset stomach.
