I know this is probably a dumb question, but I have to stretch a canvas that only has about a 1/2 inch border on one side. Should I sew a strip of similar material to it as I would a needlework without a sufficient border?

Thanks,
Bobby

Question Stretching Canvas without much margin

Yes, that can be a good solution. Just find a scrap of similar material and run it through a sewing machine.....might want to make sure that you have a nice tight stitch and I usually run two seams for extra strength.

Best material would be linen canvas.

Beva 371 and 8xx polyester is the easiest solution. Rob Markoff will sell you a small quantity.

Whatever you decide, talk it over with your customer.

Adding fabric to a canvas can destroy the value of the artwork since it technically modifies the medium.

Sometimes in cases like this, I frame it like a standard portrait, under glass with matting.

I think that you might look into that a little more. I have a customer who brings in restored canvasses, owned by a foundation, for framing and resale via auction and those canvasses often have beva extensions - doesn't seem to bother their resale at $15,000 to $45,000.

This is an important point for sure....but the canvas was restored by a foundation...and not by a framer with a sewing machine.

We should send things to conservators that need to be sent to conservators.... most framers aren't fabric or paper conservators.

I think we're saying the same thing.

This is a small canvas. Nothing of great value. It was actually stretched previously, but had become very loose so we were going to just re-do it. Actually, I think whoever had it before must have trimmed the excess canvas away. Those B*****ds! I think sewing additional material to it will be acceptable. Thanks for all the replies!

Is it still on the stretcher bars? And if so, can they be keyed out to restore the tension? That would be your easiest solution.

Not any more, I've already removed it! Besides, it was VERY loose. I think it was beyond being able to tighten. Not sure why it was that loose.
