Sticky Residue on Varnished Wood

I have a very nice frame, that had masking tape on it for a long time. (Don't have a clue as to why). Now there is a really yucky bit of sticky residue that needs to be removed. Does any have a good method for this?

Unseal, lighter fluid and similar solvents will remove the tape residue, but experiment first to make sure it doesn't remove anything else.

And use plenty of ventilation.
 
... or not. I kinds like the smell of Bestine and keep a can for use at home. WHY do retailers insist on impossible-to-remove price tags.

Yeahyeahyeah - I know why. But I paid for the thing. It would be a lovely service if the tag were removed at the time of purchase, by the person who stuck it on there.
