This weekend was our state professional photographers convention. Because of other things going on, I was only able to get there for one program on Monday afternoon but the one I got to see was with artist Steve Hanks. It was very interesting seeing how his art has progressed and how he paints. He works from photos he takes because he is trying to capture the way light looks for that fleeting instant; not a steady diffuse light like you'd get from a north light window. He doesn't project the photos and draw from them though; he is an excellent technical artist, especially with drawing the human figure. I think he is the real "painter of light" becasue he tries to paint the light on his subjects as you would really see it if you were there, not some idealized version. He came across as very genuine and real. I especially enjoyed his stories about going to art school in San Francisco in the 60s. :D

Anne,

Interesting comment about light and painting....

I have an original watercolor that I framed recently for a customer. I also had the pleasure of talking to the artist himself and he explained that since he painted "plein-air" (I had to look it up, outdoors!)... the changing light shows in his painting. I hadn't even noticed it... but you could see the shadows changes on different parts of the building (a lighthouse in Maine) he had painted...over the hours he was sitting there. I never would have noticed it if he had not pointed it out.

So Painter of Light is a term more than one artist can capture!!

They could, if it wasn't for the fact that I think TK trademarked it for himself!
