Thought I'ld try another post of a stepped frame. This is one I did finish. It is red, brown and black casien over a gesso base. The gesso was thickly glopped on and left fairly rough. After painting, the whole thing was sealed with shellac and then a final finish of paste wax with rottenstone. The painting is by the Cuban artist Wayacon. It was framed for a collector. Sorry the photo is so dark, hope you can see it ok. The painting is about 20" square and the frame about 5" wide.

The frame itself took about 5hr. and at $50 ft retailed for $550. I used poplar wood. The frame is two layers. The bottom layer is 1x6 and is just butt joined. The top is 1x3 and is mitred and glued and nailed to the bottom layer. The "steps" were cut on a table saw and a little sight edge was done with a router. Materials for the frame ran under $50. The entire order was about $700 which included restretching, museum glass and fitting (with spacer).

Terry!

That is one Kick-*** finish.

$50/ft.... a little cheap. I would have figured about $65... but, it doesn't look like you got hurt. :D
