This may be a simple question for most of you but...I need to make a shadowbox deeper. How does stacker moulding work? Can I add it to the back of a frame? Pictures would be great. Just can't figure it out on my own....

Stacker moulding has a notch in the back for more moulding to 'stack' on top.

This is an example:

Can you use stacker moulding with regular moulding to increase the depth?
Take a look at these images which will make the answer a little clearer.9531.jpg9532.jpgSee how the top moulding has an extra rabbit? That is where the stacker goes. A normal moulding doesn't have the extra rabbit and can't be used with the stacker.

Depends on the moulding for matches. You can take another moulding and turn it up on it's back to cut and join. The lip of the rabbet sticks up and the face frame drops down into recess.

Presto 425 or 421 stacker

We designed the Presto #425 stacker to work with any profile. It is a satin black so you do not notice it on most mouldings. You can either set the featured moulding on the "rabbet part" or you can "flip it over" so to speak. I have used it both ways. When "flipped over" you can attach the moulding with barrel hinges allowing access to the inside. The rabbet part is then used to hold the backer board.

#421 adds 1-1/8"

There are several ways to increase rabbet depth. Here are a few:

1. Use RabbetSpace from FrameTek, the plastic extrusion that easily screws to the back of the frame. Very quick & easy.

2. Use a standard set of "cap" and "extender" mouldings, such as others have described.

3. Add a back-frame made of standard moulding turned vertically instead of horizontally.

4. Glue & screw/nail/staple a "backbox" to the back of the frame, made out of ordinary dimension lumber, such as 1/2" x 1" stock, then paint it matte black or finish it to match the frame.

5. Build a glass shadowbox on the front of the frame, instead of using ordinary flat glazing. (for instructions, see "Celebration Shadowboxes", page 32, PFM January 2012)

Or if you carry Larson Juhl products you might want to look at their "television" extender frame. I don't have it (or the name apparently) handy but it basically screws onto the back of a moulding.
