Well, another how to question.

If I was to use a 3M spray (77 for example) to mount a 8x10 or 8x12 photo to a substrate (foamcore (for example)), what dimensions would I cut the foamcore....1/8" less than the frame?
I wonder if it is hard to centre the picture on the core, does it grab quickly or do I have a minute or two play time. The next thought would be to cut the foam core oversize, then, after adhering the photo trim the foamcore to the right size, square to the photo. Up to now I have just hinge mounted, but I want to add to my repitoire. Vivian Kistlers' mounting book didn't cover that (at least I didn't see it in there in my last flip through)

Catch that...I used her full name! ;)

Thanks All
James

If you wish to add mounting to your repertoire I would suggest PMS rather than 77 spray. I think the 77 would be in the "gives conservators the willies" category on the C/P scale! PMS would be way further up that scale (and WAY less messy!).

Personally, if I use a spray mount which is not often, I mount the object and then trim the foam core to size. Just my personal preference.

I agree with Mike. It’s often less time consuming to start with a slightly oversized substrate, plunk it roughly in the middle, then trim. That is my preferred way of dry mounting large items, too.

I meant PMA - Positionable Mounting Adhesive - not PMS (which is Positionable Mounting STUFF!)!

I too mount oversize and trim - MUCH easier!!!

I also use a larger than finished size substrate, then trim after.

I caution you on using Super77 for mounting. It is flammable, it will kill you if you breath it, literally, and it is not permanent. I started framing a little over 11 years ago and some of my early work is starting to come off the board it was mounted to.

Try this, use SureMount adhesive with a paint spray gun. It works like a champ.

I have seen PMS do a lot of things, but I don't know about it mounting a poster.

Lets add that the pictures would replaceable, so conservation isn't a high consideration....Can you give me an idea what PMA is...trade names?
How is it used? Is it the stuff that is like a film that has a release paper front and back (kinda like real big ATG with with releasablity)...WHOO Boy, I think I just bastardized the English Language again!
Thanks

I buy my PMA from United so you can get the specs from them. There have been several discussions about its use on the Grumble so you should be able to "search" for them. It does have size limitations (mainly ease of use issues)but for 16x20 and smaller it is the BEST!!!

PS - I like the word "releasability." This is how the language evolves!

If you want to use 77 spray and get good reliable results let the piece sit a minute after spraying to let some of the solvent evaporate then weight it for a good long time so the adhesive really sets up. Overnight is best. I was told this years ago by a 3M rep and it really made a difference in the permanence of the bond.

I had a look at the online catalog but couldn't find it...have a part #, or name,,,,thanks

United number 3430 they sell a squeegee #2986 but don't buy it as one comes with the roll.
sold in 11, 16 and 24" by 50' rolls.

Used the stuff almost exclusively because I wanted to avoid the toxic 77 and Vac-U-Mount.

Good liuck with it.

BTW I have heard talk of a spray made by <strike>Elmers,</strike> Borden that is supposed to be really good as well.

Crescent sells PMA boards on different substrates. Look it up in your suppliers index by PSX and PS3X. Those are on 2 ply and 4 ply X board. They also have it on a foamboard substrate. All are available in 32 x 40 and 40 x 60. Bainbridge has a similar product SAFC32316 and SAFC40316 which is 32 x 40 and 40 x 60.

The SureMount adhesive in a paint gun has a much better ROI and you pick your own substrate. I like Bainbridge's ArtCare foamboard.
