Does anyone have experience & a suggestion for the type of spray gun to use for spraying gesso? Gravity feed? Traditional? HVLP?

I have used a standard automotive touch up gun with a 8 -10 oz bottle. The key is to warm the gun before use. I placed the gun with attached bottle in a pail of hot water. Depending on your formula you might have to thin it down 5%-10% with additional water.

it always amazes me what is posted on YouTube with no explaination or reason.

Terry, I've used the HVLP gun from Rockler with pretty good success. But I do usually shoot a thinner mix as I don't like a thick layer that needs repare. I want a fast steel wool or wet linen and on to the bole.

I use an HVLP system (occasionally), I believe gun is a Fujiwa?. My own issues are due to a lack of an enclosed spray room, I only use it when doing large number of frames (and can do it outdoors). The overspray willl travel farther than you might think.

Gesso mixture is usually the one from Marty Horowitz.

Brushing gesso is more time consuming, but for a handful at a time, you save on the cleanup.

Do you have a specific use in mind?

Man..... that is exactly the gun I went looking for about 8 years ago. I love those things. all but zero clean up and you can just slap a mason lid on the jars to keep stuff like shellac that is tinted.

Also you can stick the jar of gesso in a double boiler or microwave and heat it up. Thanks for the link Jerry.

I sprayed some frames years ago & it gave a nice consistant surface once I got it spraying right but getting it right, keeping it right & clean up, well, yeah, I went back to brushing. I'm just doing one frame now but it has about a 4" wide flat panel & I thought I might try spraying as I think it will give me a more consistant surface needing less sanding. My sprayer is a siphon feed model. Just wondered if there was one that worked perfect, first time, every time. No mess no fuss. I'm a dreamer. Thanks for the input. Maybe I'll just dig my old gun out & see what happens.

Geez Jerry, I didn't know what you were talking about..... those look just right.... and I'm driving right past HF tomorrow on the way to bleed.

Even at $10, you can't go wrong.
