I did a search and came up with the thread regarding this subject (from 9/02) - and I just want to see if there are any other approaches recommended.

The top mat I am using is available in oversize (thank goodness!) and the under mat will be spliced or the technique that intrigued me was suggested by Rick Granick where he used strips with the beveled edge - similar to a beveled accent technique...

I guess I am looking for moral support to be able to take that deep breath and dive in!!

Thanks!

Go for it!

You can do it!

(Is that what you meant, Roz?)

P.S. I like the "beveled strips" approach.

Roz, I tried it both ways. Niether is too hard. Depending on how much reveal you have, the "beveled strips" makes the seam less visible in my opinion.

I am assuming you don't have to "extend" either side. Of course, if you don't have to extend either side, you could use a smaller mat and add strips around it under the top mat.

Oh, never mind. Just do it! It will be fine! :D

I recently did an oversized mat for a 45" x 45" opening for a large business it was 1 of 7 large ones. The top mat came in oversize but oversize is 40 x 60. So I decided to be artistic and did all three mats as a patchwork pattern. Started on the bottom with the corners....I could go on, I'd even post a picture if I hadn't ripped it up in total frustration. Anyway the thing was beautiful and added to the art (a series of painted blocks) that it all became a piece of art. The designer loved it everybody loved it, they hung it up in the office building and the one lady that didn't like it was the one that had the right to make the choice. I had to redo it with simple splices, I put 2 hours into that mat and didn't even charge for it!

All I'm saying is before you do anything that is unusual get customers ok first!
