how long would it take you, and what is the appropriate charge for spider mounting 40 Mardi Gras doubloons-they're like a thin 2'' in diameter coin??

When you say 'spider mount' are you talking about a Mylar coin mount?

Are all 40 in the same frame? If so why not use tight fit sinks with an Optium overlay. Much easier/faster.

In this shop, using a CMC to cut the clear film spiders and the pattern of slots for each spider in the mount board, that would be charged as a 3-hour task; almost $200 for the mounting.

If the circles and slots must be cut manually using an X-Acto knife, I'd make it a 5-hour task.

Edit: Andrew beat me to this suggestion...
An easier way to do it would be to cut reverse-bevel circles in the mounting mat to fit the coins, creating a sink-mount for each one. Then, cut a top mat with the same pattern of holes, but with openings larger (say, 1/4" larger), so the mounting mat also works as an accent mat.

Using double-sided tape (not ATG), attach a sheet of clear film on the back of the top mat, and space that assembly above the coins, so the clear film "windows" press against the coins just enough to hold them in their sinks. Or, you could use a sheet of glass or acrylic instead of clear film. This technique might take about half the time required for spider mounts.

Another idea? Since these are supposed to be doubloons, aka "pirate money", perhaps you could put them in a bag made of wide-mesh nylon tulle (any color you like), which might give the impression of them being captured in a fishnet. If that idea appeals, don't bother to secure each coin -- let them rattle.
