Early this year I bought a used Speed-Mat 32x40 - an old orange board model. I've used it a great deal as a board and glass sizer but it has been marginal for cutting good mats. It would just cut a barely acceptable mat with a lot of tweaking,
I took advantage of Esterly's annual service contract and sent the head back for a rebuild. That solved everything for what I thought was a very reasonable price. The machine now works great.
If your Speed-Mat is doing things like hooking slightly in the corners and not cutting through on one side - time for a head tune-up. Esterly's service was excellent. They even agreed to send the unit to me in Canada by USPS to avoid the excessive brokerage charges applied by the courier companies.
Cheers,
Bill Peters
